POSITION SUMMARY:
Seeking a Bioinformatics Intern to join the Early Cancer Detection program at Natera, a leading liquid biopsy test company in oncology and women’s health. The mission of this program is to discover, interpret, and validate genetic and epigenetic biomarkers which can be used in early cancer diagnostics and screening. A bioinformatics scientist intern will be involved in all stages of the data science workflow, from forming hypotheses and collating public data to modeling and validating those models on proprietary data. The ideal candidate should be currently pursuing a PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Biostatistics, or a related field such as Statistics or Computer Science with familiarity with genomics and expecting to graduate within one or two years.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Design, implement, and validate algorithms and machine learning approaches to analyze large-scale genomic data sets
- Create coherent reports that effectively communicate the objective and flow of an analysis
- Work with our team of computational scientists to answer specific biological questions
- Collaborate with molecular biologists and clinical scientists to come up with creative research strategies that solve challenging problems in oncology
- Contribute to experimental design and quality control
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Currently pursuing a PhD in statistics, biostatistics, bioinformatics, computer science, computational biology or a related field, ideally within one or two years of expected graduation
- Experience in Python, shell scripting, Unix command-line tools
- Experience in algorithm development, data analysis, and statistical learning
- Exposure to next generation sequencing (NGS) or public databases such as TCGA
- Ability to visualize findings and summarize results in oral and written form
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Previous experience in healthcare
- Previous exposure to next-generation sequencing analysis
- Familiarity with the main notions in epigenetics
- Facile with a deep learning framework (PyTorch or JAX preferred!)
- Familiar with basic probabilistic modeling
PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Duties are typically performed in an office setting. This position requires the ability to use a computer keyboard, communicate over the telephone, and read printed material.
