What you’ll do & Who you areThe role is open for candidates with varied levels of experience - we care that you are passionate about data engineering and product development/enabling (ML Engineering, Data Warehousing, etc.), that you have a strong focus on execution, delivery and customer impact, and that you craft code that is understandable, simple and clean.
You will join a growing team of knowledgeable and talented Data Engineers to develop a large-scale platform, data pipelines, MLOps and Analytics initiatives working in AWS and Databricks. You will work closely with our Machine Learning, Data Science and Analytics teams, as well as our platform and product teams.
We expect you to contribute to the architecture of our system, and help to make it more scalable and resilient. As part of our team, we want you to spot opportunities to improve the development work in all areas from coding and processes, to tools and testing.

About the team
The Data Engineering Team is a guild of Data Engineers that get embedded in our product teams to facilitate the usage of our data platform to improve Marktplaats’ services and products. The data engineers enable the product teams in the company to make use of our platform to deploy ML models, create datasets, and run experiments (between others) while complying with our governance policies to guarantee the security and proper usage of Marktplaats’ data. As part of a product team, a Data Engineer will learn in depth the business context of the domain and both create solutions that are specific to the domain’s needs and report issues and missing capabilities to the Platform Team for their investigation and feature planning.
Responsibilities:
Work in the Data Engineering Team building shared assets and solutions for common problems identified in our Product Teams.
Work embedded in cross-domain teams enabling their ability to create, deploy and maintain data products (ML models, microservices, curated datasets or tooling, depends on the team)
Be a key team member in development and design of new products that add value to our internal and external users
Collaborate with a cross functional team in an agile environment
Continuously improve development work in all areas (coding, processes, tools, testing, etc.)
Qualifications:
Experience in backend development (Scala, Python preferred)
Experience in high traffic and/or distributed systems
Experience in cloud providers (AWS preferred)
Experience working with Data Scientists, Data Warehouse and/or Analytics team
Experience in Big Data technologies such as Spark and Airflow
A degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
Nice to have:
Experience in Scala, Java
Experience in Databricks
Experience in ElasticSearch and/or Cassandra
Experience in Machine Learning lifecycle, MLOps
