Job DescriptionThe AI, Learning and Intelligent Systems (ALIS) group in the Computational Sciences Center at NREL is looking for a researcher with a demonstrated track record in AI, cybersecurity, and federated learning. The researcher should be dynamic, motivated, and have a strong interest in advancing the renewable energy mission of NREL.
The successful candidate will contribute to existing projects related to enhancing energy system security, safety of foundation models, and privacy challenges in DER systems by supporting NREL’s research in AI trustworthiness, distributed learning, privacy-preserving AI, and cyber resilience. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to program development to secure new funding streams, as well as develop and expand existing collaborations across NREL, the DOE, industry, and academia. The successful candidate will also mentor students and postdocs.
Candidates should have a strong technical background, good work ethic, and be comfortable learning and applying new technologies, keeping pace with research and development, and performing many technical tasks. The role requires collaboration and effective communication with peers, mentors, and team members. The successful candidate should have a high degree of curiosity, excitement to work as part of a diverse team, and the ability to adapt to needs of differing projects and challenges by gaining and utilizing new skills in support of research goals.

Basic QualificationsRelevant PhD . Or, relevant Master's Degree and 3 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 5 or more years of experience . Demonstrates broad understanding and wide application of engineering technical procedures, principles, theories and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines. Demonstrates leadership in one or more areas of team, task or project lead responsibilities. Demonstrated experience in management of projects. Very good writing, interpersonal and communication skills.* Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.
Additional Required Qualifications· Demonstrated research experience and publication record at leading venues in AI privacy, trustworthiness, and federated learning
· Demonstrated experience in privacy-enhancing technologies, including differential privacy and cryptographic tools (such as homomorphic encryption and zero-knowledge proofs)
· Excellent communication skills and demonstrated interdisciplinary work experience
· Demonstrated experience in leveraging high-performance computing
Preferred Qualifications· Demonstrated programming experience in C/C++, Java, Python, and using ML frameworks such as Pytorch and Tensorflow, Research experience in foundation models and/or large language models
· Experience with cybersecurity in power systems
· Experience with writing proposals for research funding

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)Job Profile: Researcher III / Annual Salary Range: $79,600 - $143,300NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
