We are looking for a Director, Data Science to join our Cell Targeted Precision Medicine team in Boston, Massachusetts (Waltham). You will use your hands-on expertise in single-cell analysis, data science, and AI to establish a comprehensive single-cell data infrastructure and analysis framework. You will accelerate project delivery and develop innovative scalable approaches to extracting valuable insights from single-cell, spatial, and digital pathology data. Your role in Oncology Data Science will involve close collaboration with Translational Medicine to ensure an efficient data flow. This includes internal data generation, external analytic sources, and supporting pipeline decisions and data integration/AI initiatives.

In this role, you will:

  • Use data science, machine learning, and visualization to address challenges in drug development, including support for design and interpretation of clinical trials at single-cell resolution.

  • Prioritize data flow and integration needs in a sophisticated matrix organization, establishing alignments to deliver projects across business areas with contending priorities.

  • Deliver cell-level insights in clinical projects within pharma using data science and AI.

  • See opportunities for internal method development and contracting external services, influence strategic decision-making, and ensure execution of data flow and analysis plans.

  • Advise strategy around data integration across functions.

  • Mentor junior colleagues.

  • Promote team use of good software engineering approaches e.g., GitHub, Docker, unit testing.

  • Ensure workflows are aligned with clinical development approaches and other appropriate regulations and procedures.

  • Develop and communicate data analytic/machine learning methods and insights with various domain experts.

  • Develop collaborations with external academic and commercial enterprises to bring to bear technical and scientific innovation in cell data science.

  • Provide creative input within the overall data science community at AstraZeneca.

  • Continue to develop as a data scientist/machine learning expert using assigned personal development time.

Essential Skills/Experience

  • Ph.D in a data-intensive quantitative subject area

  • 7+ years of meaningful experience applying machine learning and data science technologies in a pharma setting, especially with a focus on single-cell technology.

  • Experience within the pharmaceutical industry with an understanding of drug development and the use of cell-resolution data in this context.

  • Demonstrated results in delivery excellence with a fail-fast philosophy and ability to maintain focus in demanding high-impact situations.

  • Deep knowledge and understanding of single-cell and spatial data analysis.

  • Experience developing scalable new methods and controlled data workflows, including user interfaces.

  • Understanding of how to build robust and well-tested models considering data privacy and ethical AI principles.

  • Experienced in Python and familiar with modern software engineering practices and collaborative tools (e.g., AWS, GitHub, Docker).

  • Excellent communication skills and collaborative skills to achieve objectives.

  • Ability to build project-level strategy and provide leadership through mentorship and coaching.

Desirable Skills/Experience

  • Experienced with clinical data standards, medical terminologies, and controlled vocabularies used in healthcare data and ontologies.

  • Use of single-cell data analysis to address pharma needs with patient-level data.

  • Track record of collaborating successfully on cross-disciplinary global teams delivering impactful data science projects and analyses for partners.

  • Multiple published papers and/or patents, contribution to open-source projects.
