The Epidemiology team is part of the Strategic Planning and Performance division, and works to understand the distribution and determinants of the occurrence of disease in Alberta. The Epidemiology team also works to understand how the occurrence of disease affects health care service utilization in Alberta. This work directly supports Government of Alberta leadership to develop policies that guide the health care system in Alberta and policies that improve the health of Albertans.

Role Responsibilities

Reporting to the Manager of the Epidemiology team, the Health Data Analyst provides expertise and leadership to Alberta Health and the broader Government of Alberta. The Health Data Analyst has a unique and advanced analytic skill set. In addition to advanced epidemiologic expertise, the Health Data Analyst has expertise with cutting edge anomaly and cluster detection methods. 

The primary purposes of this position are to: 

  • Quantify the distribution of disease occurrence in Alberta.
  • Quantify the determinants of disease occurrence in Alberta.
  • Detect unexpected disease occurrence in Alberta.

 
The Health Data Analyst quantifies the distribution and determinants of disease occurrence for optimal health care system policy as well as detects unexpected disease occurrence to protect the health of Albertans.
 
The Health Data Analyst is also regularly required to solve novel and difficult problems where there are no established solutions. The problems are often complex and sensitive, such as the opioid crisis response and the COVID-19 pandemic response.

Qualifications

A University Degree in a related field (e.g. Public Health, Epidemiology; Social Sciences; Economics, Statistics, or related field), and a minimum of four (4) years of progressively related work experience is required. 

Equivalency: 
Related experience or education may be considered as an equivalency on a one for one basis.

The Health Data Analyst requires experience and technical competencies of:

  • Experience with epidemiologic principles and practice.
  • Experience working with advanced analytic principles and practice, especially anomaly and cluster detection methods.
  • Experience with health care system data.
  • Expert understanding of data management principles and practice.
  • Expert understanding of internal and external resources.
  • Demonstrated ability to research diseases.
  • Expert ability to critically review academic literature.
  • Excellent ability to critically assess alternative actions and develop recommendations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate results to key stakeholders.
  • Excellent understanding of policy formation, regulatory reform, legislation development, planning, and accountability.

7.25 hours daily/ 36.25 hours weekly, Monday to Friday
 
Location
ATB Place North, Edmonton, Alberta. position requires working from the office with an option to qualify for a hybrid work arrangement (in accordance with GOA policy).
