  • Job Title: Data Engineer
  • Level & Responsibility: this role is at a Senior Executive level or equivalent and has the responsibility of build data solutions for the SMG. 
  • Salary: £40k+ per annum, depending on experience, plus a 10% bonus scheme 
  • Location & Hybrid Working: 1 day a week in London or Leeds 

The role

As a Data Engineer at SMG, your primary purpose will be to design, implement, and optimize advanced data solutions that drive the future of retail media and commerce marketing. You will be critical in enabling seamless data integration, fostering innovation, and supporting AI-driven analytics in collaboration with cross-functional teams.

Why you?

In line with our company values, within your role you'll want to stay honest, stay hungry, stay foolish, and most importantly, have fun! More specifically, you'll have / be:

Technical 

    • Proficiency in Python, SQL, and an additional programming language (e.g., Scala, Java).
    • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and data services (e.g., S3, BigQuery, Snowflake).
    • Expertise in database systems (relational and non-relational).
    • Hands-on experience with data pipeline tools (e.g., Apache Airflow, Kafka).
    • Familiarity with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, Looker) is a plus.

Non-technical 

  • Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication skills for cross-functional collaboration.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage tasks in a fast-paced environment.

What you'll be doing

Data Infrastructure Development:

  • Build robust, scalable, and efficient data pipelines for AI-driven applications.
  • Design data models and architectures for retail media analytics and campaign optimization.

Data Integration and ETL:

  • Collaborate with teams to ingest and process large-scale datasets.
  • Develop and enhance ETL processes for consistent, high-quality data delivery.

Performance Optimization:

  • Monitor and improve data systems and pipelines for reliability and performance.
  • Optimize database queries and storage for high-velocity retail data.

Data Governance:

  • Ensure compliance with data security, privacy, and regulatory standards (e.g., GDPR).
  • Maintain data quality, consistency, and integrity across systems.

Innovation and Automation:

  • Automate repetitive tasks with third-party tools.
