HybridRTX Corporation is an Aerospace and Defense company that provides advanced systems and services for commercial, military and government customers worldwide. It comprises three industry-leading businesses – Collins Aerospace Systems, Pratt & Whitney, and Raytheon. Its 185,000 employees enable the company to operate at the edge of known science as they imagine and deliver solutions that push the boundaries in quantum physics, electric propulsion, directed energy, hypersonics, avionics and cybersecurity. The company, formed in 2020 through the combination of Raytheon Company and the United Technologies Corporation aerospace businesses, is headquartered in Arlington, VA.
To realize our full potential, RTX is committed to creating a company where all employees are respected, valued and supported in the pursuit of their goals. We know companies that embrace diversity in all its forms not only deliver stronger business results, but also become a force for good, fueling stronger business performance and greater opportunity for employees, partners, investors and communities to succeed.
The following position is to join our RTX Technology Research Center (RTRC) Team:
RTRC serves as the innovation hub for RTX. We conduct basic and applied research in a stimulating multi-disciplinary environment where scientists, engineers, practitioners, and subject matter experts collaborate and exchange experience. We transform that research into the solutions and products that help our businesses shape the future. For more than 95 years RTRC has operated as a multidisciplinary group of experts collaborating on groundbreaking innovations. Our team includes some of the world’s leading scientists, researchers and engineers working to anticipate the discoveries destined to change everything, and they transform that research into the solutions and products that help our businesses shape the future of aerospace and defense. Our unique talent, experience and resources allow us to deliver rapid responses to critical, time-sensitive challenges and develop breakthroughs for a safer, more connected world.
The Optimization Team develops and deploys advanced computational mathematics and optimization methods for complex product and system designs and efficient aftermarket services. We support all RTX business units, including both development of novel solutions for future products and solving the toughest problems with current products. We are looking for a highly motivated summer intern eager to apply cutting-edge techniques in cybersecurity or optimization, enhanced by machine learning methods. This internship offers the opportunity to work on transitioning novel concepts from research to impactful applications, providing valuable hands-on experience that can influence real-world business and technology solutions. The intern will work closely with an experienced RTRC Principal Investigator (PI) who will provide mentorship and guidance throughout the project.
What You Will Do
As a summer intern, you will have the opportunity to contribute to research projects in one of the following areas:
- Optimization & Machine Learning: Assist with projects involving optimization enhanced by machine learning, distributed optimization, and parallel/cloud computation. You'll have the chance to work with computational mathematics and high-performance computing to address complex industrial problems.
- Cybersecurity: Contribute to projects aimed at enhancing cybersecurity in wireless communication (5G) through programmable networking, improving cyber resiliency for industrial control systems, and developing advanced machine learning-based anomaly detection for cyber monitoring. You will also work on detecting and mitigating Trojan attacks on deep learning models.
Qualifications You Must Have
- Currently pursuing a graduate degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) in Mathematics, Computer Science, Operations Research, or a related Engineering discipline. Candidates must not graduate prior August 2025. Please submit a copy of your academic transcripts with your application.
- 2+ year of experience (internship, coursework, or personal projects) with one or more programming languages, such as MATLAB, Python, Rust, or C/C++.
- U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, permanent resident, refugee or asylee) or eligible to obtain necessary export authorizations required. https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-22/chapter-I/subchapter-M/part-120/subpart-C/section-120.62
Qualifications We Prefer
- Experience in one or more of the following areas: numerical analysis, mathematical optimization, machine learning, cybersecurity, or communications.
- Familiarity with ML libraries (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch), NS3 simulation, or hold OSCP certificates (or equivalent experience in cybersecurity).
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with a willingness to work in a collaborative team environment.
- Adaptability and the ability to learn quickly, with a proactive attitude and eagerness to take on new challenges.
- A passion for applying theoretical concepts to real-world problems and the ability to think innovatively when approaching complex problems.
