Back End Engineer - iwocaPay

Hybrid in London, UK

We’re looking for a back end engineer to join our iwocaPay team

iwocaPay provides trade credit and Buy-Now-Pay-Later (BNPL) solutions to businesses. The team works with hundreds of sellers to help thousands of buyers manage their cash flow, increase their purchasing power and operate with flexibility.

The company

Fast, flexible finance empowers small businesses to manage their cash flow better and seize opportunities - making their business and the economy stronger as a whole. At iwoca, we do just that. We help businesses get the funds they need, when they need it, often within minutes. We’ve already made several billion in funding available to more than 100,000 businesses since we launched in 2012, and positioned ourselves as a leading Fintech in Europe.

Our mission is to finance one million businesses. We’ll get there by continuing to make our finance ever more relevant and accessible to more businesses by combining cutting-edge technology, data science, and a 5-star customer service.

The team

The iwocaPay team operates as an independent start-up within a larger company, iwoca. We are growing quickly and the team now has more than 30 people, including five engineers, two product managers, one designer as well as all the relevant operational roles. While holding ourselves to high standards, we believe in quick iteration cycles to deliver impactful features. We have a daily standup and regular offsites to make sure we work well together. We work closely with the other teams at iwoca on shared code and enjoy the benefits of shared resources, like support from a dedicated DevOps team.

The role

As a back end engineer joining the iwocaPay team, you'll work on back-end, and data systems to ensure suppliers get paid efficiently.

Ownership and Influence:

  • Shape our credit-decision systems by defining and implementing data structures for our Machine-Learning models, to ensure accuracy and scalability.

  • Build and refine features for ecommerce integrations. You’ll make plugins that are effective, well-documented, and quick to implement for suppliers.

User-centric, data-driven approach:

  • Use data to identify opportunities and measure improvements to our platform, processes, and user journeys.

Collaboration:

  • Work with cross-functional teams like product, operations, and design to elevate the user experience.

  • Collaborate with other parts of iwoca to make iwocaPay-specific changes to shared parts of the codebase.

The requirements

Essential:

  • Proficiency in Python with back-end development experience.

  • Experience designing, building, and managing relational databases.

  • Experience with data analytics and Machine Learning processes.

  • Experience or interest in Front-end development, particularly with React + Typescript.

Bonus:

  • Experience with Django and PostgreSQL.

  • Familiarity with DevOps practices, including containerisation and CI/CD processes.

  • A strong numerate academic background, i.e. maths, physics, computer science, engineering, or similar.

The salary

We expect to pay from £50,000 - £70,000 for this role. We routinely benchmark salaries against market rates, and run quarterly performance and salary reviews.

The culture

At iwoca, we prioritise a culture of learning, growth, and support, and invest in the professional development of our team members. We value thought and skill diversity, and encourage you to explore new areas of interest to help us innovate and improve our products and services.

The offices

We put a lot of effort into making iwoca a brilliant place to work:

  • Offices in London, Leeds, and Frankfurt with plenty of drinks and snacks.

  • Events and clubs, like bingo, comedy nights, yoga classes, football, etc.

The benefits

  • Flexible working.

  • Medical insurance from Vitality, including discounted gym membership.

  • A private GP service (separate from Vitality) for you, your partner, and your dependents.

  • 25 days’ holiday, an extra day off for your birthday, the option to buy or sell an additional five days of annual leave, and unlimited unpaid leave.

  • A one-month, fully paid sabbatical after four years.

  • Instant access to emotional and mental health support.

  • 3% Pension contributions and share options.

  • Generous parental leave and a nursery tax benefit scheme to help you save money.

  • Cycle-to-work scheme and electric car scheme.

  • Two company retreats a year, we’ve been to France, Italy, Spain, and further afield.

And to make sure we all keep learning, we offer:

  • A learning and development budget for everyone.

  • Company-wide talks with internal and external speakers.

  • Access to learning platforms like Treehouse.
