Job DescriptionNREL’s Transportation Energy Transition Analysis (TETA) group in the Center for Integrated Mobility Sciences (CIMS) is seeking full- or part-time graduate or highly qualified undergraduate interns to work on application and development of software tools used for analysis and modeling of sustainable mobility technologies. Sub-topics include agent-based simulation, web tool development, distributed energy resource modeling, and financial analysis.
Specific tasks may include:
- Develop reusable and flexible data processing workflows for an evolving list of data inputs/outputs.
- Under direction of senior staff, maintain and/or to implement new features in existing software used for applications such as modeling vehicle technology adoption, electric vehicle charging behavior, and characterizing opportunities for emerging technologies or business models (e.g., micromobility, ride-hailing).
- Manage large-scale simulations on high-performance computing resources and effectively visualize results.
- Document methods and assumptions, plus assist with preparing peer-reviewed publications along with high-quality technical reports and presentations.

Basic QualificationsMinimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.Undergraduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a bachelor’s degree program from an accredited institution.
Post Undergraduate: Earned a bachelor’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.
Graduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a master’s degree program from an accredited institution.
Post Graduate: Earned a master’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.
Graduate + PhD: Completed master’s degree and enrolled as PhD student from an accredited institution.

Additional Required QualificationsTo be considered, all candidates must include in their resume an online code repository such as GitHub with several publicly visible coding projects. Preferred QualificationsHighest priority preferred qualifications:
- Strong software engineering skills, as demonstrated by substantial coding/modeling experience, ideally showing versatility across multiple languages and tools/practices.
- Strong experience with Python, Julia, and/or R.
- Motivation to drive high engineering standards on the team through code review, testing, and knowledge sharing.
- Strong collaboration skills—thrives working in a collaborative team environment but is comfortable working independently when necessary.
- Experience with open source, collaborative software development and use of tools such as GitHub for project management and version control.
- Experience in transportation science and/or familiarity with basic electric vehicle and charging infrastructure terminology.
Additional preferred qualifications:
- Experience with written documentation of results and with creating compelling figures and visuals.
- Experience with data analytics, big data management, scraping data off the web, high-performance/distributed computing, machine learning and/or deep learning.
- Passion for innovative data visualization and animations.
- Cumulative undergraduate/graduate GPA over 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)Job Profile: / Annual Salary Range: $42,700 - $68,300NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees.
