Bell Labs' research facility in Cambridge is a leading lab working in the areas of Mobile and Wearable Sensing and Systems, Applied Machine Learning, Social Computing and Internet of Things research.

Pervasive Systems research department studies the forms, intelligence and applications of mobile, IoT, wearable devices. The department’s research objectives include but not limited to:

  • Enhancing compute, communication, and thermal efficiency of the next billion smart devices.
  • Building data-efficient, distributed robust and automated device intelligence
  • Designing collaborative, privacy- preserving, and interactive multi-device systems


What you will learn and contribute to

We have multiple  (on-site only) openings for 2024 summer internships in our Pervasive Systems research department. Students currently enrolled in a PhD or Masters program (Computer Science or Electrical Engineering) are being recruited tor the following projects. Multiple positions are available for the following topic.

Sensory Wearables for MedTech

To explore the development of sensory MedTech devices aimed at delivering personalised, efficient, and privacy-preserving healthcare solutions. This includes focusing on innovative signal processing techniques, enhancing computational performance, and ensuring robust privacy measures to support long-term studies in diagnostics, well-being, hearing, and cognitive health.

Research experience sought: Expertise in one or more of the following areas: (1) wearable sensing with IMU, PPG, ECG, and microphones; (2) signal processing techniques such as filtering, Fourier transforms, and spectral analysis; (3) embedded systems and firmware development for microcontrollers; (4) basic circuit design and prototyping with COTS sensors and microcontrollers; and (5) data collection on human subjects, including knowledge of study design, data acquisition, and working with participants.

Preferred programming skills: Proficiency in Python or MATLAB or C/C++ for advanced signal processing is essential. Expertise in areas such as wearable sensing and firmware development for microcontrollers and frameworks like FreeRTOS is highly desirable.
