Description

PREP Research Associate

This position is part of the National Institute of Standards (NIST) Professional Research Experience (PREP) program. NIST recognizes that its research staff may wish to collaborate with researchers at academic institutions on specific projects of mutual interest, thus requires that such institutions must be the recipient of a PREP award. The PREP program requires staff from a wide range of backgrounds to work on scientific research in many areas. Employees in this position will perform technical work that underpins the scientific research of the collaboration.

Research Title:

Analytical Chemist

The work will entail:

This position is for a postdoctoral researcher to conduct research to characterize fire dynamics via combustion product concentrations. The researcher will construct a tunable diode laser open-path system that measures spatially averaged combustion product concentrations in real time. After benchmarking the system in lab-scale experiments, the techniques will be applied in large-scale experiments. The researcher will also use analysis methods to develop a robust quantification tool packaged into transferable software. The research will be disseminated in archival journals, and the results will be used to establish an extinction model for enclosure fires.

Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Design, develop, and fabricate a tunable diode laser open-path system with a validated method to measure combustion products in the gas phase
  • Implement a tunable diode laser open-path system in large-scale fire experiments to characterize fire dynamics via species concentration measurements
  • Develop a method that performs real-time analysis of spectral data used to measure combustion product concentration

§  Presenting results at internal meetings and occasional meetings with external stakeholders.

§  Ensuring that results, protocols, software, and documentation have been archived or transmitted to the larger organization.

Qualifications

§  A Doctoral degree in Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, or a related field.

§  Experience with optics and laser-based spectroscopy involving laser heterodyne radiometers, Fourier transform infrared spectrometers, tunable diode laser open-path instrumentation, and non-dispersive infrared sensors

§  Familiarity with liquid and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry systems

§  Ability to interpret spectral data and implement statistical analysis and quantification methods to obtain analyte concentration measurements

§  Familiarity with Python, MATLAB, Fortran, computer-aided design, and Microsoft Office software

§  Must be able to troubleshoot instrumentation for development and measurement purposes.

§  Strong oral and written technical communication skills.

Application Instructions

Please upload the following with your application:
