Managing Director - Artificial Intelligence

State Street’s Artificial Intelligence organization is responsible for enhancing our State Street products and services with AI to deliver productivity gains, efficiency, innovative products and services, driving the organization’s competitive edge in the financial sector. Our AI team researches and deploys all forms of AI uniquely applying these cutting edge technologies to problems in the financial services domain.  We are looking for an experienced professional with a passion for delivering business value with AI to join our team as an Artificial Intelligence Managing Director.

The Managing Director of Artificial Intelligence will lead State Street’s strategic efforts in AI research, innovation, and deployment. This role encompasses the creation and oversight of a scalable cloud platform infrastructure to host advanced AI workloads, including Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs).

We are looking for a strong passionate AI Leader with a proven track record of leading global development teams to apply all forms of AI to solve large, complex business problems in a real-world software product development setting. Ideal candidates have experience architecting, designing, developing, deploying and supporting enterprise wide AI solutions on a variety of cloud platforms. This position reports directly to the company’s Automation and Artificial Intelligence Senior executive within our Global Technology Services division and will be responsible for achieving business objectives and key results.

Leadership and Strategy

• Develop and execute a comprehensive AI strategy aligned with State Street’s business goals.
• Establish an AI Center of Excellence to ensure best practices, compliance, and cutting-edge innovation
• Partner with executive leadership to identify opportunities for AI-driven solutions in productivity, customer experience, and product development

Research and Development

• Oversee the development of advanced AI capabilities, including Generative AI, LLMs, and other frontier technologies.
• Lead exploratory projects and proof-of-concept initiatives, transitioning successful concepts into scalable solutions.
• Manage AI, machine learning, deep learning, generative AI and data science teams, aligned with business needs and delivering value.
• Build and maintain a robust cloud platform to support AI workloads, ensuring scalability, security, and efficiency
• Drive the development and implementation of innovative algorithms and methodologies to address complex business challenges.
• Collaborate with IT and cloud service providers to optimize infrastructure for AI demands
• Provide technical guidance and promote best practices within the team.
• Ensure the quality of project deliverables meet the required standards.
• Collaborate with cross-functional executives, providing technical leadership in the development of AI-driven applications..

Responsible AI

• Establish frameworks to ensure ethical AI usage and compliance with regulatory standards
• Ensure that all AI development and deployment adheres to Responsible AI principles and conforms to State Street’s AI Risk Framework.
• Foster a culture of responsible innovation across the organization

Generative AI

• Develop, implement, and optimize large language models and Generative AI technologies, including training, finetuning, quantizing and computation optimizations.
• Collaborate with software engineers to integrate LLMs and Generative AI capabilities into applications and production environments.
• Improve upon the state-of-the-art in Generative AI model architectures and training techniques.
• Demonstrate first-hand experience with deep reinforcement learning, fine-tuning methods (like RLHF & DPO) as well as parameter efficient techniques (like LoRA & DoRA).

Industry research and Innovation

• Stay at the forefront of AI trends, ensuring State Street remains an industry leader in AI adoption
• Lead external and academic AI partnerships
• Conduct pioneering research in Generative AI, Large Language Models, NLP, Information Retrieval, Vision and GenAI Agent based frameworks.
• Mentor and guide a team of innovative researchers and developers, fostering an inclusive culture of innovation, excellence, and continuous learning.
• Expand State Street’s external and industry impact by publishing external papers, speaking at external conferences and creating new Intellectual Property for State Street.  

Management

• Lead AI development managers, team leads, software engineers, machine and deep learning engineers, and data scientists to maximize impact and throughput.
• Exhibit State Street culture, core values and management principles.

• Attract and retain talented people.

Qualification

A minimum of 15 years of relevant work experience with an Advanced degree preferred (e.g. Masters) or 7+ years of work experience with a PhD in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Machine Learning, or related disciplines.

Proven experience in a senior leadership role within AI, data science or technology innovation preferably within the financial services industry.

Strong track record of building, managing and inspiring high-performing teams.

Deep expertise in AI technologies, including data science/machine learning, deep learning, MLOPs , Generative AI, and LLMs.

Proficiency in Python and relevant ML libraries (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch).

Experience in deep learning frameworks (like PyTorch or TensorFlow) and distributed training tools (like DeepSpeed or Pytorch Distributed).

Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills

Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., Azure, AWS) and distributed computing.

Strong understanding of software engineering principles and best practices.

Proficiency in prompt engineering for large language models

Experience with Databricks or Azure Machine Learning for scalable data processing and analytics

Knowledge of containerization technologies, such as Docker, for efficient deployment and management of AI/ML solutions
