Overview:

SageSure, a leader in catastrophe-exposed property insurance, is seeking a Principal BI Engineer to join our dynamic Business Intelligence team and play a pivotal role in converting complex data into actionable insights that drive strategic decisions across our organization.  In this role, you’ll be responsible for both designing and building complex data models as well as providing architectural guidance to our growing team of developers. The Principal BI Engineer will play a pivotal role in helping shape the future of SageSure’s data capabilities, building advanced BI Solutions and providing the architectural direction necessary to ensure excellence across the team. The development and optimization of data pipelines and structures that support reporting, analytics, and decision-making processes. You’ll have the unique opportunity to lead the design of highly scalable solutions while mentoring a team of 15 BI developers, ensuring best practices across the board. 

What you’d be doing: 

In this role, you will take the lead in designing, implementing, and maintaining scalable ETL/ELT processes, transforming business rules into structured datasets using tools like SQL, Python, AWS Redshift, and more. You will be responsible for reviewing and optimizing data development projects across the team, ensuring that projects adhere to best practices and architectural standards. A key part of your work will involve designing automation strategies to replace manual data processes, improving efficiency and accuracy across the company’s data landscape.  

You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to ensure the BI architecture supports the increasing demand for advanced analytics and data science initiatives. Additionally, you'll take the lead on complex data modeling as the team migrates from SQL to Redshift, ensuring that the data infrastructure meets both current and future business needs. You will also play an active role in architectural discussions, promoting the use of best-in-class tools and ensuring alignment with business requirements. 

Your role involves: 

  •  Architect & Design: Lead the design of scalable data models and architecture to support the BI and analytics needs of the company. Design and implement best practices and standards. 
  • Consult & Guide: Provide architectural guidance to BI developers across the team, reviewing code and ensuring adherence to the highest standards. 
  • Build & Implement: Contribute directly to development by building high-performance datasets and automated workflows using AWS Redshift, SQL, Python, and other cutting-edge tools. 
  • Performance Optimization: Ensure that all BI solutions are designed with performance and scalability in mind. Continuously review and optimize data pipelines and reporting processes. 
  • Leadership & Mentoring: Provide leadership to a team of 15 BI developers, offering both technical mentorship and guidance on project execution. Lead by example as a senior resource who can contribute directly to projects. 
  • Data Governance: Oversee the creation of reusable data assets, enforce data quality standards, and ensure that established data governance best practices are adhered to across the team. 
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with Engineering, Product, and Executive teams to translate complex business requirements into technical BI solutions that drive actionable insights. 

We’re looking for someone who has: 

  • 7+ years of experience with SQL, Python, and other programming languages related to ETL/ELT and data transformation. 
  • 7+ years of experience building data solutions for broad consumption and reporting solutions using leading BI tools (Tableau, Qlik, PowerBI, Domo, etc.). 
  • Proven experience leading and mentoring data developers, ensuring adherence to best practices in both coding and architecture. 
  • A track record of implementing large-scale data projects, from data analysis, through to implementation.  
  • Strong experience in performance tuning, troubleshooting, and optimizing SQL queries and data models. 
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills, able to interface with both technical teams and business users to align on solutions. 
  • Experience working in cloud-based environments (AWS preferred), with a focus on data warehousing (Redshift/Azure) and related technologies. 
  • Familiarity with automated testing frameworks for validating data integrity. 
  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or a related field (preferred, but not required). 

Highly preferred candidates also have: 

  • Proficiency in AWS infrastructure (Redshift/Athena) or similar platforms (Google, Snowflake etc).  
  • Proficiency tuning ETL processes and warehouse databases  
  • Experience in Insurance specifically Property & Casualty data systems
