Edinburgh International Data Facility – Applications Consultant

EPCC, the UK’s leading High-Performance Computing and Data Analytics centre at the University of Edinburgh, is growing our team of Application Consultants and Developers, with a focus on delivery of data science services using ML and DevOps practices. Since 2015, EPCC has developed and managed the Edinburgh International Data Facility (EIDF) (https://edinburgh-international-data-facility.ed.ac.uk/) at our Advanced Computing Facility (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tlnHgI0weWQ).

EIDF is a set of customer, data and compute services optimised for data science. EPCC designs, implements and manages all these services. Our customer services range from helpdesk queries to partnering up as a team member in a research project. Our data services include data publishing, data cataloguing and large data hosting with over 40 petabytes of capacity. Our compute services include hundreds of GPU accelerators, several Cerebras AI units, large-memory (18TB) compute clusters, notebook servers and virtual machines. All of these, and many more, services are in continuous development to adapt to our users’ needs, which is where you come in.

The EIDF, combined with hundreds of research projects delivered in partnership with companies, universities and public sector organisations underpin Edinburgh’s ambition to be the data capital of Europe. If you have skills in our key areas and are interested in joining one of Europe’s premier data centres at this exciting time, we’d love to hear from you.

We are looking for:

  • Team members that span Software Engineering and Data Science to deliver and support new services and technologies.
  • People who can demonstrate skills in data science languages Python and R, and software engineering (e.g., coding skills, testing frameworks, version control, use of distributed infrastructure (e.g., Kubernetes, containers), data engineering (e.g., databases, streaming, MLops), and machine learning (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, LLM models).
  • People who can demonstrate the ability to interact with users of services and software to deliver results that satisfy user requirements.
  • People who can demonstrate the ability to deliver well-documented designs and implementations of software, data pipelines and analytical methods.
  • People with an awareness of information security and governance because EPCC must meet globally recognised ISO accreditation standards for it to continue to deliver secure “Trusted Research Environments”.
