Data Lead - Print
Sydney, Australia
Job Description
Join the team redefining how the world experiences design.
Hey, g'day, mabuhay, kia ora, 你好, hallo, vítejte!
Thanks for stopping by. We know job hunting can be a little time consuming and you're probably keen to find out what's on offer, so we'll get straight to the point.
Where and how you can work:
Our flagship campus is in Sydney. We also have a campus in Melbourne and co-working spaces in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. But you have choice in where and how you work. That means if you want to do your thing in the office (if you're near one), at home or a bit of both, it's up to you.
What you’d be doing in this role:
As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that's all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you'll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.
This role will rely on your ability to act as a strategic thought leader for the Print group, using your inside data knowledge and the business performance to align with Print leadership on the best path forward for the Print business at Canva. You’ll be coaching a group of 6 data scientists and 1 analytics engineer, mentoring them in how to become business partners, instead of a service team of technical people.
The data challenges for Print are many, but include some incredibly exciting opportunities such as: providing smart routing for selecting the best print service partner, developing near real-time operations dashboards for the Operations team, developing pricing methodologies that allows for effective margins and discounting, advising our marketing team on how to personalize campaigns to drive Print revenue and engagement, and connecting the Print business to our Canva subscription business in a symbiotic manner.
Key responsibilities of the Data Science Lead include:
- being a strategic thought partner to the Print business and identifying opportunities for the team to leverage data to make better strategic decisions
- Coach a team of Data Scientists and Analytics Engineers.
- Drive the data strategy in the group and the product insights and experimentation strategy for the company, coordinating closely with the Product Leads and Engineering Leads.
- It will require the ability to align senior stakeholders and a real sense of drive and initiative to keep things moving. Nobody tells you what to do; you identify the opportunities where your team can make the largest impact and you see it through.
- Manage project intake, pipeline, prioritise, and manage staffing against key initiatives.
- You have people skills and know how to coordinate a team, align with stakeholders, and organise a data strategy.
- Find insights that help us understand both Canva and our customers - we want you to be creative and insightful, rather than just throwing the usual metrics at the wall to see what sticks
- Own projects, data models, dashboards, and other artifacts and keep them up-to-date and high quality in a hypergrowth environment
- Use our giant databases to answer the sort of questions that sound really simple but turn out to be challenging (and fun!)
You're probably a match if
- Demonstrable experience leading data specialists, defining team strategy, and data roadmaps.
- Experience with internal-facing data tooling at scale, including BI tools, experiment platforms, glossaries and other tools
- Strong competency with SQL; experience with data warehouses such as Snowflake, Redshift, or BigQuery
- Experience with optimising product funnels, running experiments, and building dashboards that effectively communicate results and outcomes
- Experience with very large data sets is a huge plus, but not required
- Strong communication skills - verbal and written - be able to break down complex topics into simple solutions and ideas. Stakeholder management skills are vital in this role.
- Proven track record of building out a data-driven culture where data drives the strategy forward.
- Ability to drive alignment with disparate stakeholders and rally them around a goal or vision.
About the team
The Print Group is a growing, dynamic part of Canva, focused on making print easier, smarter, and more enjoyable for our users. It is a vastly different space than the rest of the SaaS business and requires not only a different mindset, but the ability to bridge our strategies with our growth-minded leaders for our subscription business. You’ll lead talented analytics engineers and data scientists to build cutting-edge infrastructure that tracks every step of the print journey, from revenue to costs—creating a seamless user experience that scales. Think streamlined data, intelligent systems, and infinite possibilities for innovation.
