Job Description

Primary Function of Position

The Ion endoluminal system is Intuitive's robotic platform for minimally invasive biopsy in the peripheral lung, with an initial goal of improving the early diagnosis of lung cancer. Ion’s Data team is responsible for developing data pipelines, applications, and tools that generate insights and drive decision making for internal and external stakeholders. The successful candidate in this role will manage a high-performing data engineering team to develop robust and performant data pipelines and related applications. You will work as a technical mentor and team builder.

Essential Job Duties

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and business units to understand and communicate Ion’s needs and goals.
  • Drive software development and data engineering work across a variety of technical areas, including log-based data pipelines, real-time event streams, and data modeling.
  • Own the complete software lifecycle for our data-related software releases, covering requirements definition, prototyping, development, testing, and release.
  • Work closely with our data scientists and adjacent software teams to make sure our pipelines and data models support our analytics and reporting goals.
  • Promote best practices in software development and data engineering, including code reviews, coding conventions, testing frameworks, sprint planning, and design patterns.
  • Create, maintain, and track bottom-up schedules to consistently achieve team deliverables.
  • Assess and recommend new tools and technologies that make the data team more effective.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to individual contributors, fostering a culture of learning and growth.
  • Perform managerial duties such as recruiting, hiring, goal setting, and performance feedback.

Qualifications

Required Skills and Experience

  • Extensive hands-on experience in architecting, developing, and launching production-level data pipelines and monitoring.
  • Proficient in Python, SQL, and related languages.
  • Experience with platforms and tooling such as Snowflake, AWS, Airflow, Kafka, and dbt or similar.
  • Previous experience as a software or data team tech lead, either formal or informal.
  • Desire to perform managerial duties and team member mentorship.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a collaborative mindset.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a team-oriented environment.

Required Education and Training

  • Minimum Bachelor's, Master's or PhD degree in computer science or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years relevant work experience in data engineering and/or software engineering.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Experience with containerization tools like Docker and RESTful APIs.
  • Familiarity with observability and alerting tools such as Datadog and PagerDuty.
  • Experience working with cybersecurity and data privacy requirements.
  • Experience working in medical devices or other regulated industries.
