Job Description

The Oncology Early Development (OED) Principal Data Scientist is a key Development Operations Leadership role in the management of clinical data and analytics, ensuring strategic insights through analysis of data and information across the AbbVie OED portfolio. This is a role critical to ensuring the strong analytical capability of OED through the leveraging of emerging technologies including language models/AI, and data from various internal and external sources.  In this role, the Principal Data Scientist’s primary focus will be building analytical capabilities of the department while collaborating with leaders and key stakeholders to support deep, analytical understanding of OED’s Clinical Operations portfolio.

  • Partner with cross-functional teams to identify new opportunities requiring the use of modern analytical and modeling techniques; Lead the design, analysis, and interpretation of projects from data requirement gathering to data processing, modeling, and recommendations
  • Build production ready advanced analytics solutions to drive effective business and scientific decisions
  • Drive the definition, design, implementation and validation of cutting-edge algorithms to analyze disparate data sources to achieve targeted outcomes by leveraging machine-learning and Artificial Intelligence approaches, predictive and statistical modeling concepts, clustering and classification techniques
  • Design experiments to answer key analytical questions that to drive speed and efficiency within the oncology early clinical development pipeline
  • Own the full lifecycle of model development from ideation and data exploration, algorithm design and testing, algorithm development and deployment, to algorithm monitoring and tuning in production.
  • Ensures adherence to federal regulations and applicable local regulations, Good Clinical Practices (GCPs), ICH Guidelines, AbbVie Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and to functional quality standards.  Stays abreast of new and/or evolving local regulations, guidelines and policies related to clinical development
  • Innovate with new approaches, staying abreast of current research in the recommendations field, RWD applications, and the broader machine-learning community. Shares technical solutions and product ideas with the team through robust documentations and effective presentations
  • Responsible for coaching and mentoring junior team members. May include indirect supervision of employee and contract staff
  • Collaborates across R&D functional areas to link data and key learnings for broad impact on complex, cross-functional projects involving multiple scientific and/or clinical discipline and Advanced Analytics methodologies.  Capable of translating complex data science findings to broad audiences (both technical & non-technical) 
  • Responsible for development, maintenance, and analytical insight of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) across the OED portfolio. 
  • Develop tools and data reports to inform analytical understanding and strategy for teams throughout the lifecycle of oncology asset early development
  • Concisely summarizes and translates data outputs into powerpoint presentations/narratives or other formats for the purpose of governance, decision making or other key cross-functional meetings

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree statistics, analytics, bioinformatics, data science or equivalent field. Master’s degree or Doctorate preferred
  • 8+ years of experience building, evaluating and deploying machine learning models or other advanced analytics capabilities at scale
  • Expert in the field / Principal Advisor level proficiency in R, Python or other statistical packages.
  • Expert-level knowledge of statistical and data mining techniques
  • Experience with visualization tools like Spotfire, Tableau or equivalent
  • Demonstrated project management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to take analytical reports and outputs and convert them into concise presentation format.
  • Experience with Machine Learning and other advanced analytics techniques preferred
  • Experience working in Cloud Computing environments (e.g., AWS, Azure, etc) is preferred
  • Demonstrated effective communication skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate analytical and technical concepts in layman’s terms
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Demonstrated history of successful execution in a fast-paced environment and in managing multiple priorities effectively
  • Demonstrated ability to influence cross-functional leaders; Good understanding of clinical development functional areas and related processes
  • Experience in oncology clinical development

  • The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range.
