The Mission, Concepts & Capabilities (MCC) division Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA) has an outstanding internship opportunity for an Applied Machine Learning Intern who is looking to gain meaningful work experience in the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning. The qualified intern will be part of an interdisciplinary team of scientists and engineers developing innovative models to assist optical technicians evaluate and characterize protective eyewear for aircrew personnel. The candidate will develop, train, and validate machine learning models to predict human performance measures when using experimental lenses.

The candidate will develop, train, and validate machine learning models to predict human performance measures when using experimental lenses.  Development of models will be performed within Jupyter Notebooks.  Models will be packaged for deployment to a lens assessment software package.  All model and code development will use Python.  As part of the model development process, the candidate will prepare data, run simulations, and analyze data.  

As an ARA intern, you will have opportunities for career advancement and continued learning outside of your primary job functions. ARA interns participate in teambuilding activities, attend technical brownbag presentations, and gain experience working in a professional office environment. Each ARA intern will prepare and present a technical briefing overviewing their work to the ARA technical staff at the conclusion of their internship.

This position is in-person and will last for approximately 12 weeks, beginning May 27, 2025. Please note that ARA does not provide housing assistance or relocation stipends.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ability to program in Python
  • Experience with multiple machine learning software packages such as SK-Learn, Keras, TensorFlow, or PyTorch
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen with full citizen rights
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance
  • Must be a currently enrolled, full-time student in a Bachelor’s Degree program or above in Data Science, Computational Science, Statistics, Physics, Mathematics, or related field at an accredited university

Desired Experience:

  • Entering final year of study
  • College level coursework in optics or physics
  • Experience developing classification and regression machine learning models
