The role
The Data Scientist will engage collaboratively to conduct high-quality research, scholarship and creative activities generating high impact outputs, with mentorship from leaders within the research team. This position is suited to an emerging researcher keen to explore and build on new areas and foster research and researcher development to have real-world impact and contribute to a dynamic and enthusiastic research team.
Australia’s Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) is a national collaborative research infrastructure, supported by the Australian government to undertake systematic observing of Australia’s marine environment. These observations produce data streams that are publicly available via the Australian Ocean Data Network (AODN) and support a range of research and operational activities across academic, government, and industry. Reporting to the Professor in Marine Science the data scientist will be engaged across the IMOS portfolio including the Coastal Wave Buoy Facility, Victorian National Reference Station and Animal Tracking Facility and will undertake activities including operational oceanography, data management including quality assurance and delivery to National depositories.
As a Data Scientist, you will:
- Conduct high-quality research, scholarship and creative activities generating high impact outputs, with mentorship
- Engage collaboratively to participate in novel and high-quality research or creative activities
- Communicate outputs, including as part of team
- Ensure impact of academic activity on the field and the community
- Support and may lead applications for funding for research and creative activities
- Begin building a body of work and reputation and recognition for quality, excellence and impact.
To be successful, you’ll have:
- This position may require the incumbent to travel domestically and/or internationally to attend conferences, events and to represent the university.
- This position requires the incumbent to hold a current Working with children Check
- Field expertise in operational oceanography and data management
- Relevant PhD or Masters qualification in physical oceanography or data science, or demonstrated equivalent competency in a related field
- Demonstrated experience in Matlab and/or Python and development of code repositories using collaborative approaches (i.e. GitHub)
- Proficiency in a range of computing skills, including word processing, spreadsheets, databases and data visualisation
