The Institute for Mind and Biology at the University of Chicago enables research fundamental questions about the mind and its dynamic interaction with the biological systems of the body. The Experience, Memory and Knowledge Lab aim to understand the neurophysiological mechanisms that enable the formation of knowledge for individual experiences. Job Summary

The job provides technical support activities related to scientific research projects. Ensures compliance of research activities with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives and mandates. Assists in drafting presentations on research findings.

The Junior Research Assistant position provides technical support activities related to scientific research projects in the lab. This full time position is ideal for those wishing to gain experience in a research laboratory before applying for graduate school in neuroscience.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for lab inventory management.

  • Order, receive and setup lab equipment.

  • Oversee research compliance.

  • Interact with campus research and compliance committees (communication and meetings).

  • General lab upkeep.

  • Rat colony management.

  • General animal handling and care.

  • Breeding and genotyping.

  • Assist in experiments.

  • Prepare experimental equipment.

  • Provide technical support to lab members.

  • Perform experiments and procedures to support data collection.

  • This job provides technical and administrative support in a laboratory environment performing basic laboratory techniques, research and analysis under direction.

  • Collects and enters data. Assists in analysis of data and with preparation of reports, manuscripts and other documents.

  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include vocational training, apprenticeships or the equivalent experience in related field (not typically required to have a four-year degree).


Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • BA or BS in a biology discipline.

Experience:

  • Experience working in a biology research laboratory.

Technical Skills and Knowledge

  • Rodent research techniques and methods.
  • PCR
  • Proficiency in productivity apps (Microsoft 365, GSuite or OSX equivalent).
  • Basic knowledge of 3D printing and workshop tools.
  • Basic coding experience (Python or Matlab) is a bonus.


Preferred Competencies

  • Work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced laboratory environment.
  • Evidence of manual dexterity.
  • Evidence of analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Motivated to learn new skills.
