Intern Role Name: Data Analytics Intern
Term: Spring 2025 Office Location: NYC/Financial District Hourly Rate: Undergraduate $17.00/hr                      Graduate $19.00/hr If requested, HDC will support an intern’s application for credit or stipend from theirschool/university.  About HDC The New York City Housing Development Corporation (HDC) is a public benefit corporation and the nation’s largest municipal Housing Finance Agency. HDC seeks to increase the supply of multi-family housing, stimulate economic growth, and revitalize neighborhoods by financing the creation and preservation of affordable housing for low-, moderate-, and middle-income New Yorkers. HDC’s programs support the construction and preservation of multi-family affordable housing in New York City.   Position Summary:The Data Analytics Intern will gain experience conducting data analysis that tells stories about housing. As part of a team, you will undertake assignments to help colleagues better understand emerging housing issues, inform decision making on policy proposals, and support HDC’s Data Governance program. Through one or more projects, you will receive coaching and support on how to:

  • Work with data using industry-standard open source and proprietary tools
  • Communicate complex ideas, findings, and processes effectively to a variety of audiences
  • Use data to influence colleagues’ understanding of critical or novel issues
The Data Analytics Intern will report to the Data Scientist in the Data Management Unit (DMU) while collaborating with the broader Policy & Analytics Division (P&A). In the service of HDC leadership, P&A provides policy advisory, financial and data analytics, and operational planning services to increase HDC’s capacity to build and preserve affordable housing and advance the life outcomes of residents living in HDC housing. DMU leads data initiatives within P&A. Recent projects on which the team has worked on include: monitoring rental arrears and financial trends in multifamily housing, analyzing citywide eviction patterns, implementing a data governance program, identifying applicable local emission compliance requirements for HDC buildings, and integrating external data sources into the team’s database.

Responsibilities: 
  • Execute data cleaning, analysis, and visualization in Excel and R as needed for various projects 
  • Communicate findings to the P&A and DMU teams along with other key stakeholders
  • Extract data housed in HDC’s enterprise data systems and prepare it for analysis
  • Undertake special projects/initiatives as requested.
 Required Qualifications: 
  • Must be pursuing a bachelor’s or graduate-level degree in any field of study
  • Experience coding in R (Tidyverse), Python (Pandas), or other data analysis software (e.g., Stata) 
  • Proficiency in Excel  
  • Introductory coursework in statistics  
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills 
  Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Intermediate coursework in statistics, math, data science, computer science, economics or other quantitative social sciences 
  • Experience using GitHub for version control and collaboration 
  • Experience using PowerBI
