About the Team SmartThings is seeking a Staff Data Scientist, Product to join our Product Operations team. Collaborating closely with leaders across the organization, you will play a pivotal role in establishing and leading new data analytics initiatives at SmartThings. You will be responsible for leveraging data to gain valuable insights, power data-driven decision-making, and enhance the overall performance and user experience of our smart home solutions.  This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of SmartThings through analytics and drive innovation in the IoT domain.

Key Responsibilities

This position is a hybrid role, based onsite 3 days a week at our office in Minneapolis, MN. 

In this role, your primary responsibilities will include the following: 
As Staff Data Scientist, Product, you will be a catalyst in the evolution of data-driven Product Management at SmartThings. As part of that, the work will require both short and long-term thinking and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, flexing skills at many different levels of detail as we deliver everything from specific, time-sensitive custom analyses to executing broad-range, long-term strategic plans.
Relationship-building and collaboration with parties at all levels across SmartThings as well as Samsung’s global organization will be crucial, and success will require tact and leadership by influence. Your work will carry meaningful impact across SmartThings’ product roadmap, delivering customer insights that will shape decisions large and small.
Key responsibilities will include:

Strategy (~25%)
  • Shape the Product Operations strategic roadmap by leveraging data and partnering with key stakeholders to define priorities, identify barriers, and influence data practices to support our goals
  • Serve as a conduit between Product Ops efforts and global teams
  • Build and deliver a plan to drive meaningful progress in our use of data to understand customers by training, influencing, and supporting our Product team
Execution (~75%)
  • Establish data best practices; Build documentation and training materials to educate team members and develop colleagues’ capabilities;
  • Improve data literacy, data accessibility, and analysis velocity for Product team members by developing libraries and resources;
  • Perform analysis utilizing relevant tools (e.g., SQL, R, Python). Provide analytical thought leadership through proactive and strategic contributions (e.g., suggests new analyses, infrastructure or experiments to drive improvements in the business).
  • Support product development & go-to-market by providing the right data at the right time, pairing with Customer Insights to bridge “what” and “why;”
  • Share recommendations and business impact to drive data platform improvements as needed

What You Bring On Day One (Required Qualifications) 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Electrical/Computer Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science, or related technical field
  • 10+ years of experience in a software engineering or data science/engineering role using key data science programming languages (e.g., Python, R, SQL) or 8 years and a Masters degree
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, and experience displaying data insights visually using Excel/Google Sheets, Powerpoint/Slides, etc.
  • Proven ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders across the organization at all levels
  • Strong business acumen with the ability to build sustainable processes, make data-driven decisions and manage change in a fast-paced environment

Base compensation range for this position is $140,000 to $190,000. Actual base within this range will depend on many factors including experience, skills, technical expertise and market alignment. In addition, this role is eligible for a 20% annual target bonus based heavily on individual performance.
