Intern - Embedded Systems & Artificial Intelligence

We are seeking three (3) skilled engineering students to join Itron with a focus on embedded systems to support our team that is leading projects and research related to integrating artificial intelligence (AI) inference/training platforms and models into constrained hardware platforms. The ideal candidate will have a strong background firmware, hardware, and/or software and an interest in learning and supporting experimental products.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

• Assist senior engineers with design, development, and optimization of embedded software systems and AI models, with focus on optimization for resource-constrained hardware.

• Support AI model inference and training on embedded platforms, utilizing decentralized and distributed training methodologies.

• Support a software stack, including support for both inference and training processes.

• Learn from and collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve product performance. 

• Aid in monitoring and analyzing analyze equipment behavior using AI-driven approaches to detect anomalies in utility and metering systems.

Duration: To start immediately, at least 20 hours per week for winter/spring 2025 academic term, full-time Summer 2025.

Required Skills & Experience:

• Education: Enrolled in a related degree program (preference for hardware, firmware, electrical, and/or advanced coursework in software)

• Exposure to embedded systems

• Intermediate programming abilities in languages such as C, C++, and Python for embedded systems

• Strong mathematical skills (preference, linear algebra, calculus, probability, and statistics)

• Professional workplace communication skills

Preferred Skills & Experience:

• Previous academic or work experience on projects related to AI and/or embedded systems

• Understanding of Machine Learning

San Jose, CA, hourly compensation range: $25 - $57/hr
