Job Description Summary:

Braintree as one of subsidiary of PayPal which focus on the Large Enterprise Merchants lets you move money from one place to another safely and securely. As a Senior Software Engineer on the Business Risk Engineering team, you will work on the development and improvements of the Risk Scoring Engine that directly protects PayPal and our Merchants. You will play a key role on an engineering team that is directly responsible for Fraud Detection and Fraud Response.

Job Description:

As a Senior Software Engineer on the Business Risk Platform Engineering team, you will work on an integrated system developing the tools and fraud detection engines that our internal Risk Ops team use to monitor merchants' processing behavior that directly protects PayPal and our Merchants.

You will play a key role on an engineering team that is directly responsible for Fraud Detection and Fraud Response. In your day-to-day role you will work closely with the Business Risk Tech Lead and Direct Management, infrastructure teams, product management, data science and risk analyst teams to understand and implement new product requirements, meet compliance and regulatory obligations.

You will gain exposure to cross functional technology and business domains such as transaction processing and settlement. You will have the chance to work with various teams and technology stacks.

We operate in a cloud environment which requires a deep understanding of cloud storage and computing resources and networking capabilities. Security is of utmost importance, and we require systems to be operable by mitigating security and operational risks via regular updates to dependencies, frameworks, and code base, we require keeping a low vulnerability score per quarter.

Communication is key to our process, and we don't want to hinder it with walls. Many teams program in pairs, which means you always have another set of eyes to help you.

We practice test-driven development and believe that it helps us deliver simple solutions focused on real customer needs. Developers test, release and monitor their own code.

We keep the team in sync with daily stand-ups and have regular retrospectives to discuss things that are going well and opportunities for improvements.

What we look for in you:

  • 4+ years of track record in designing and writing understandable, testable, and easy-to-maintain software. Doesn’t matter what language, just a focus on writing clean, well designed, and scalable code.
  • Building and maintaining data systems and pipelines, including databases and data warehouses.
  • Ensuring compliance with data governance and security policies.
  • Proficiency in cloud services and platforms such as AWS and Google Cloud Platform.
  • Understanding infrastructure as a service (IaaS), platform as a service (PaaS), and software as a service (SaaS) models.
  • Ability and desire to work in our collaborative environment: open team room, pair programming and fluid interactions with all products and operations teams.
  • Familiarity with Test Driven Development and specific experiences using a test heavy approach to solve problems and create solutions.
  • Focus on building solutions utilizing an agile approach: close relationships with Product Managers communicating and digesting real time feedback.
  • Comfortable with context switching and managing across multiple priorities.
  • Be a quick learner undaunted by complex systems. Ability to expand to new domains and be able to pick up and contribute quickly.
  • Strong desire to learn, push the envelope and share knowledge with others.
  • Deep knowledge of industry design patterns and object-oriented programming.
  • Commitment to operational excellence through the development of automation, instrumentation of code, and monitoring solutions.
  • Solid knowledge of relational databases.

Key Responsibilities: 

  • System Design and Maintenance: Lead the design, implementation, testing, delivery, and operation of large-scale production systems to improve fraud prevention systems. 
  • Technical Leadership: Guide and mentor junior engineers while driving technical projects from conception to deployment. 
  • API Development: Oversee the design and implementation of APIs to facilitate seamless integration and data exchange. 
  • Cloud and Infrastructure: Build and manage distributed systems on major cloud platforms (AWS, GCP) and use infrastructure as code tools like Terraform and CloudFormation. 
  • Data Management: Apply advanced skills in SQL, ETLs, and data analysis with PostgreSQL, or similar databases. 
  • Collaboration: Partner with business units, product management, and cross-functional teams to ensure high-quality and agile delivery of solutions. 
  • Agile Development: Adapt to a fast-paced development environment, managing multiple priorities and assignments effectively.
