Job Summary
The Research Technician assists Principal Investigators (PI) and other lab personnel in a research laboratory. Primary responsibilities are to assist in experiments for research projects under supervision of the project lead or the PI. This includes analysis of and accurate recording of scripts, codes, and results, maintenance of databases used in the lab, ordering necessary reagents and other lab supplies to conduct experiments, and participation in joint upkeep of the lab.
Qualifications
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Under direction of the principal investigator, participates in the determination of the appropriate procedures that should be used, in order to carry out each experiment successfully, and yield significant scientific results.
The Technician should also be willing to learn basic concepts in bioinformatics, statistics, genomics, and computational biology as they will work on projects pertaining to single cell transcriptomics.
Works closely with the PI and assists in small animal procedures and a wide range of lab techniques such as, but not limited to, Western blot analysis, qPCR, immunohistochemistry. Works with the investigator or senior lab personnel to modify techniques as necessary, in order to meet research and/or experimental needs.
Using software, synthesizes and interprets information obtained from graphs, charts, laboratory experiments, statistical summaries and other data collection methods.
Prepares written reports on the status of each research project, analyzes and interprets the data appropriately, drawing conclusions, which are subsequently depicted graphically using tables, graphs, and charts. Collaborates with the Principal Investigator in writing and editing of the abstracts and manuscripts considered for publication.
May operate and maintain moderate to complex lab equipment such as spectrophotometer, centrifuges, incubators and other scientific equipment related to research activity.
Orders laboratory supplies.
Participates in the upkeep of the lab; this includes keeping both direct and general workspaces clean and tidy and helping maintain an overall safe and clean environment. Cleans glass and plastic ware and performs autoclaving.
May perform, or refer as needed, routine maintenance of lab equipment; reports equipment malfunctions and needs to management.
Works safely within the lab environment and in performing work duties. Wear personal protective equipment as required.
Attends and may make presentations at lab meetings and journal clubs.
Skills/Abilities/Competencies Required:
Understanding of basic scientific laboratory techniques and terminology
General laboratory skills as attained during education
Proficiency in R, Python or familiarity with computational biology is helpful
Must be self-motivated and able to work independently after training.
Ability to work carefully, accurately, and consistent with instruction or protocol
Must be able to work safely and properly use protective equipment
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Proficiency in Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Internet searches helpful
Is knowledgeable and compliant in all hospital, State and Federal regulatory requirements, including hospital policy and procedures (where applicable to the performance of the job), Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).
Education:
Bachelor's degree in biological or physical sciences.
Working Conditions:
Duties will be performed in a research laboratory. This setting may create contact or exposure to one or more of the following: chemicals, fluids, sharp instruments and other supplies and equipment consistent with a research lab. Contact or exposure may be airborne or physical. Work will be conducted over a forty-hour workweek, but actual schedule can be flexible.
