We are seeking an innovative and highly skilled Principal Data Scientist whose experience is a blend of healthcare expertise, business acumen, and advanced data science methodologies to develop impactful data-driven solutions that address the needs of GWT's Medicaid clients. You will spearhead the design and implementation of scalable data science work products while mentoring junior team members and ensuring adherence to industry best practices. This remote contract position starts in January and ends in May 2025.

WORKSITE: Remote - preferred Easter or Central Time Zone

WORK SCHEDULE: Monday - Friday

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

  • Data Science Development:

    • Develop data science solutions using advanced methodologies including quasi-experimentation, statistical modeling, and machine learning.
    • Perform data ingestion, cleansing, feature engineering, filtering, and aggregating processes.
    • Implement iterative development, CI/CD pipelines, and continuous production integration for scalable solutions.
  • Healthcare Expertise:

    • Leverage healthcare training and experience to extract actionable insights from messy, large-scale healthcare datasets (>10 billion rows).
    • Apply causal inference techniques to repurposed healthcare data, driving programmatic advancements for Medicaid clients.
  • Technical Mastery:

    • Write and optimize complex SQL queries, leveraging windowing functions, indexing, stored procedures, and materialized views.
    • Utilize Python for object-oriented designs and machine-learning workflows with a focus on explainability.
    • Work with massively parallel database environments, optimizing data models for distribution keys and schemas.
    • Handle semi-structured and unstructured data using schema-on-read approaches, parsers, and NLP packages.
  • Collaboration and Mentorship:

    • Mentor and guide less experienced team members to refine their data science craft.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and present findings to business stakeholders and executives effectively.
  • Tool Utilization:

    • Leverage mainstream BI dashboarding tools such as Power BI, Tableau, and SAS for data visualization.
    • Utilize Dev/Sec/Ops tools to enhance iterative development and performance optimization.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING:

  • Expert-level SQL and performance optimization experience with large-scale datasets.
  • Advanced Python programming skills for data science and machine learning.
  • Strong foundation in repeated measures, time series, and statistical estimation.
  • Proven ability to derive insights from healthcare data with solid medical training or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience with explainable AI, machine learning, and causal inference.
  • Proficiency in cloud-based data science environments with elastic scaling.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to mentor others.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Familiarity with CQRS data structures, state machines, and stack implementation.
  • Experience with DataBricks; knowledge of Scala is a plus.
  • Actuarial training and experience.
  • Understanding of functional programming concepts.
