Job Description

Osler is driven by a strategic Vision to go beyond for our people and communities. As part of this commitment, we are embarking on an exciting digital transformation to implement a new, modernized hospital information system (HIS). Our dedicated HIS team will collaborate closely with our trusted HIS vendor (Epic) and internal subject matter experts to develop a fully functional system that will empower us to deliver exceptional care and services.

The Epic Business Intelligence (BI) Developer is responsible for developing and maintaining data warehouses, creating effective data models and delivering high-quality reports, dashboards and visual analytics to support decision-making processes. The BI Developer is tasked with crafting scalable solutions that align with organizational goals and assist in data-driven decision-making, while also exploring opportunities to leverage machine learning techniques for enhanced predictive analytics and insights. This role is part of the HIS project structure, with a key responsibility to design, deliver and sustain our systems to address both clinical and non-clinical needs, ensuring the HIS is utilized effectively and efficiently in patient care.

Accountabilities:

  • Collaborate with stakeholders in providing support to all data analysis
  • Perform data assessment on all results and resolve business related issues; coordinate with IT and business to ensure accuracy on all data before extraction and manipulation
  • Understand and translate business needs into data models supporting long-term solutions
  • Create logical and physical data models using best practices to ensure high data quality and reduced redundancy
  • Optimize and update logical and physical data models to support new and existing projects
  • Maintain conceptual, logical and physical data models along with corresponding metadata
  • Design report layout and determine best way to offer data to end users and stakeholders
  • Translate complex concepts to make them understandable by different audiences
  • Monitor and maintain the BI environment from data extraction to report distribution
  • Responsible for data distribution to appropriate user groups in the method and frequency agreed upon with stakeholders
  • Responsible for data extraction and transformation processes to integrate new data sources:
    • Conduct impact assessment and determine size of effort based on requirements
    • Identify, recommend and implement ETL process and architecture improvements
    • Assist and verify design of solution and production of all design phase deliverables
    • Manage build phase and quality assure code to ensure fulfilling requirements and adhering to ETL architecture
    • Continuously look for opportunities to automate data extraction, transformation and reporting processes to reduce manual work and improve efficiency
  • Maintain data governance reports, data sets, and other BI solutions
  • Identifying advanced analytics opportunities in interactions with stakeholders
  • Collaborate with other members of the HIS project team and the Organizational Performance department to develop and design data solutions that are easily digestible by stakeholders (i.e., reports, dashboards, scorecards, etc.)
  • Assist with the development of training curriculum for training of reporting users
  • Create and maintain documentation to build a repository of key configuration decisions and associated build
  • Work closely with the Epic HIS vendor, project team and operational subject matter experts to help create the future state workflows by participating and leading site visits, working group meetings, validation sessions and other related meetings
  • Facilitate and participate in meetings to discuss deliverables, issues, end user concerns and upcoming milestones
  • Work closely with HIS team members to identify, document and troubleshoot issues to find creative resolutions
  • Partner with Epic HIS vendor representatives to maintain communication and help vendor staff understand hospital’s operational needs
  • Achieve Epic certification and/or accreditation
  • Participate in an on-call rotation to provide 24/7 support
  • Work extended hours (days, evenings, nights, weekends) as required

Qualifications

  • Minimum of three years of experience in developing and managing BI solutions using Microsoft Power BI or similar reporting tools
  • Experience with SQL Server, including writing complex queries, stored procedures and performance tuning for data retrieval
  • Experience with ETL processes for data extraction, transformation and loading
  • Experience in implementing data visualization best practices to present data clearly and effectively to end-users
  • Proficiency in data modeling and data warehousing concepts, including the ability to design star and snowflake schemas
  • Ability to work closely with business stakeholders to gather requirements, develop insights and create visually appealing dashboards and reports
  • Familiarity with data governance and security practices to ensure compliance with organizational policies and regulations
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail with the ability to troubleshoot and optimize BI solutions for performance and usability
  • Strong analytical skills and demonstrated success at solving complex problems
  • Ability to work with APIs for data extraction and integration from various sources
  • Familiarity with Agile development practices and working in cross-functional teams to deliver BI solutions
  • Utilize a variety of tools and technologies to manage data, develop reports and create visualizations (below is a list of essential tools that you might work with):

  • Previous experience working with a modernized HIS at an EMRAM Stage 6 or higher and/or Epic certification is an asset
  • Strong understanding of hospital workflows in either clinical or non-clinical areas is an asset
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills, strong organizational skills and well-developed written and verbal communication skills are required
  • Demonstrated proficiency working with Microsoft Enterprise applications (i.e., Visio, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint, OneNote) is required
  • Ability to learn new software and systems, demonstrating technical aptitude
  • Ability to work in an agile environment to deliver an HIS that meets end user needs
  • Ability to work independently and in collaboration with a team to meet HIS project milestones and ensure successful project delivery
  • Ability to analyze user requirements and produce creative solutions to meet end user needs
  • Ability and willingness to support project success in a manner that goes beyond completion of assigned tasks
  • Ability to persevere in a high intensity project to overcome obstacles and difficult situations within a time sensitive implementation
  • Ability to travel to the United States as required

Additional Information

Hours: Currently Days (subject to change in accordance with operational requirements)

Salary Range: $85,839.00 - $107,308.50
