Job Description

The Energy Management business unit in Statkraft is responsible for the physical optimization of more than 11 000 MW of hydropower, 15 000 MW of wind power and a consumer portfolio of more than 65 TWh/year. The unit consist of more than 150 highly skilled employees located in Oslo, Trondheim, and Düsseldorf, who all work in an integrated energy management process consisting of water, weather- and climate, market analysis, production planning and physical power trading. 

The Water, Weather and Climate team in Statkraft provides meteorological and hydrological analysis, data, and algorithms to a wide range of uses in Statkraft – from operational production planning to climate assessments, and valuations of power plants. To strengthen our capability, both with regards to competence and capacity, we are looking for a passionate Data Scientist to join the team. 

In this role your responsibilities will include developing and delivering excellent analysis and data on meteorology and hydrology to our users around the world.  

Your work will primarily revolve around

  • improving our forecasting of the hydrological and meteorological resources available to our power plants,
  • working in the modelling framework Shyft,
  • exploring machine learning applications for resource forecasts
  • and collaborating closely with colleagues and stakeholders to ensure that we provide everything our analysis teams and decision-makers need. 

Qualifications

Your profile

We are looking for someone with the essential skills to future-proof our business and renewable energy solutions, and believe that includes: 

  • Master’s degree or higher within natural sciences or information sciences.
  • Experience working with hydrological or meteorological modelling in Python or C++.
  • Experience with machine learning for time series problems.
  • Experience working with large amounts of time series data and common grid data formats.
  • Proven skills in communicating complex topics clearly and effectively.
  • A flexible approach to the kinds of problems that need to be solved at any given time.
  • Experience with agile methodologies and close, continuous teamwork is an advantage.
  • Experience within software development is an advantage.
  • Experience solving data assimilation problems is an advantage.
  • English fluency is required, both oral and written. Norwegian fluency is an advantage.
