Data Engineering at Elanco is growing across ingestion, integration, transformation, and consumption capabilities to deliver data products that will transform how the organization leverages data. The Data Engineering and Platforms team is seeking an experienced Data Engineer to provide technical leadership to both internal and partner teams working within our Enterprise Data environment. This is a broad role which will include coaching and leading junior engineers in their domain, as well as partnering with leadership to deliver on the engineering strategy.

The individual must be able to articulate complex technical topics, collaborate with internal and external partners, and ensure quality delivery of the required data products.

Reporting to the Associate Director - Data Platforms, the Lead Analytics Engineer is responsible for making our data accessible, understanding its business value, generating insights, and communicating those insights effectively to deliver value and enable decisions. This role focuses on speed to insight, raising our organization’s data fluency, and championing continual improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct in-depth data analysis to identify trends, patterns, and insights across our enterprise datasets.
  • Lead the design and implementation of scalable data modeling frameworks that transform raw data into reliable, analytics-ready datasets.
  • Establish organizational standards for metric definitions, business logic, and data transformation patterns.
  • Collaborate with data engineers to ensure raw data foundations support analytics needs.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams across Elanco to understand evolving data needs and trends.
  • Address enhancements, requests, and incidents related to our enterprise visualizations and Power Platform landscape.
  • Influence Data Platforms product owners and leadership to ensure the appropriate prioritization and planning of opportunities occurs.
  • Drive adoption and awareness of quantitative ways of working, e.g. via Objectives and Key Results.
  • Mentor analysts and analytics engineers on data modeling, SQL best practices, and analytics engineering principles.
  • Continuously educate stakeholders about services, standards, examples, and patterns provided by the Data Platforms team.
  • Work with the Product Owner and Operations Lead to ensure related service offerings are represented appropriately in the catalog, and are accessible/discoverable by stakeholders.
  • Champion testing, documentation, and version control practices for analytics code
  • Identify, share, and drive continuous improvement and data fluency opportunities.
  • Represent the Data Platforms team across Elanco as a data evangelist and champion in our various communities, forums, and working groups.
  • Adhere to change management and other ITSM processes, policies, and standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Data Analytics or equivalent professional experience.
  • 8+ years of analytics/BI experience, with 3+ years focusing on analytics engineering
  • Expertise in dimensional modeling and metrics/semantic layer design

  • Demonstrated experience building reliable, scalable analytics foundations.
  • Expertise in data testing and validation frameworks.
  • Demonstrated experience leveraging analysis, visualization, and communication skills to create artifacts resulting in actionable insights.
  • Demonstrated experience working in agile teams and cultures.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize within a global environment and drive quantitatively assessed learning and progress.
  • Knowledge of version control and code review practices for analytics.
  • Experience mentoring analysts in SQL and data modeling best practices.
  • Understanding of data governance and metadata management.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to bridge technical and business teams.
  • Experience guiding business stakeholders to understand, define, and improve metrics and insight capability.
  • Track record of improving analytics workflow efficiency.
  • Demonstrated experience with the relevant languages, tools and technologies associated with modern data analysis with an emphasis on Power BI/Power Platform, Databricks, the Azure Platform, SQL, Power Query, DAX, Python, Spark/PySpark, R, and the Google Cloud Platform.
  • Excellent emotional intelligence, stakeholder management, negotiation, deep thinking, and time management skills.
  • Strong personal accountability and organization.
  • Comfort generating, iterating on, and offering solutions in the presence of ambiguity.
  • Ability to drive diverse groups and agendas to productive consensus.
  • Strong customer orientation, and a bias for learning in a team-based environment.
  • Experience in the Animal Health / Life Science Industry.
  • Familiarity with regulated and ITIL-driven environments.
