The Data Engineering team at Amyris supports a suite of custom applications using various state-of-the-art data technologies that make this cutting-edge science possible. Being on the Data Engineering team is all about learning and sharing experiences using the technologies that will make a difference for the company.
The Senior Data Engineer will play a crucial role in developing and implementing the vision of Amyris's Data framework. This individual will work on architecture design, engineering, security, and resiliency across all Amyris Data environments. Additionally, the role involves supporting management functions, ensuring continuity, and acting as a point of contact for technical needs.
The ideal candidate will have experience in cloud and database technologies and be capable of working independently on projects ranging from simple to complex. They will work closely with stakeholders to understand the evolving needs of the business, while also mentoring junior team members. Qualified candidates should have technical and applied experience with data infrastructure installation, configuration, monitoring, high availability deployment and disaster recovery. The current position will support a diverse set of stakeholder needs with ample opportunity for creativity, innovation and skillset development.
This position will be based in Campinas and will operate on a hybrid work model, reporting directly to the team in Emeryville, California.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Data Strategy & Stakeholder Management:
  • Develop and implement a data strategy for Amyris in collaboration with stakeholders and leadership.
  • Act as the point of contact for internal partners and capabilities to deliver robust, well-thought-out solutions for technical data needs, databases, Business Intelligence (BI), Analytics, Reporting, and ETL.
  • Data Architecture & Engineering:
  • Design and document data architecture at Amyris, including upstream and downstream systems, to create a full view of data flow and design.
  • Develop and document strategies for proof of concepts (POCs) and the onboarding of new products into the Amyris data framework.
  • Automate processes and configure tools to support operational tasks, such as maintenance automation, monitoring, security auditing, and compliance.
  • Technical Implementation & Maintenance:
  • Ensure the presence of monitoring protocols that can capture, audit, and alert on deviations, ensuring quick resolutions.
  • Document all data, business rule, and metric changes for team members, executives, and power users.
  • Develop a strategy for installation, configuration, monitoring, high availability (HA), and disaster recovery (DR).
  • Support ongoing work related to API management, BI, middleware, and publishing.
  • Team Leadership & Mentorship:
  • Mentor junior team members, providing technical guidance for onboarding and growth.
  • Lead and support engineering initiatives, acting as a technical leader within the team.
  • Innovation & Research:
  • Spend 5-10% of the time researching new data products and technologies to ensure Amyris uses the latest and greatest tools in the field.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Fluency in English is required (both oral and written). 
  • Education: Master’s Degree or higher in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (advanced degree or professional certifications are a plus).
  • Experience: solid experience in data engineering, or an equivalent combination of post-bachelor’s education and experience.
  • Proven experience as a Senior Data Engineer, with a track record of handling complex projects independently.
  • Technical Skills:
  • Proficiency in SQL, schema design, and RDBMS (PostgreSQL, MSSQL, BigQuery).
  • Experience with ETL tools such as dbt, SSIS, Airflow and PySpark.
  • Programming skills in Python (preferred), Java, or Scala.
  • Experience with data cataloging and annotation tools like Alation or Dataplex.
  • Expertise in cloud environments (GCP, AWS, Azure), with exposure to multiple cloud architectures.
  • Experience in cloud data warehousing technologies (BigQuery, Redshift, Synapse, Snowflake).
  • Soft Skills:
  • Motivated self-starter capable of managing and prioritizing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with business users, software developers, and cross-functional teams.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate between technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to work both independently and with a global team.
