About the Team

The Strategy Team is responsible for developing and executing the strategic vision and direction of the College Board. We work closely with executive leadership team, business units, and external partners to identify opportunities and incubate solutions that improve educational opportunities and outcomes, particularly for low-income, first-generation, and students of color, in the context of a competitive business environment. 

The GenAI Studio is an internal incubator at College Board that launched in January 2024. Through the Studio, College Board is investing time and resources for genAI ideation. The Studio is responsibly experimenting with AI to generate user value across our portfolio of offerings as well as advising on AI literacy efforts for educators and students. The Studio is led by a diverse, cross-functional team of strategists, technologists, and managers at College Board committed to solving the most impactful and interesting problems arising with AI. 

About the Opportunity  

The College Board is seeking an Executive Director, Generative AI Business Strategy to expand the use of generative AI across existing products and processes. This is a unique opportunity for a highly motivated business and operations leader to apply their deep strategic expertise to make improvements at scale in the AI space.

You will manage a set of initiatives that cut across the College Board, providing strategic guidance and problem-solving expertise to cross-functional teams. This role requires a blend of enterprise-wide leadership within a matrixed structure, decision-making in key areas (e.g. build/buy/partner), and hands-on operational problem-solving to create meaningful outcomes.

You will oversee a combination of direct reports and dotted-line collaborators and will report to the head of the GenAI Studio.

Responsibilities include:

Scaling Generative AI Use (40%)

  • Provide strategic guidance for generative AI improvement projects, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities and seamless integration into existing products and processes.

  • Problem-solve with teams executing improvements to unlock efficiencies through AI-driven solutions.

  • Establish clear frameworks and best practices for scaling generative AI initiatives across the organization, including working closely with our AI governance structure.

AI Business Development Strategy (30%)

  • Manage the AI/generative AI strategic sourcing function, collaborating closely with partners across Finance, Legal, Risk, and Program.

  • Represent the Studio on org-wide build-versus-buy decisions, weighing technical feasibility, cost-effectiveness, and long-term scalability.

  • Maintain a clear understanding of the AI/generative AI vendor landscape, identifying opportunities to enhance our technology ecosystem.

Cross-Functional Leadership and Collaboration (15%)

  • Manage a highly matrixed team, with both direct and dotted-line reports, to drive successful execution of AI augmentation initiatives.

  • Foster strong collaboration across organizational divisions, ensuring cross-functional alignment and seamless communication.

  • Serve as a trusted partner to internal stakeholders, supporting the operational execution of AI initiatives while identifying new opportunities for impact.

Learning, ideating, and sharing (15%)

  • Understand evolving needs of educators and students as Generative AI begins to shift the U.S. education landscape

  • Understand College Board program (AP, SAT Suite, BigFuture) needs and strategies in service of connecting GenAI product strategy

  • Study key GenAI initiatives of other educational organizations

  • Share knowledge of new developments with the team via chats, recurring meetings, and presentations when appropriate

About You 

You have:

  • 10+ years of relevant and progressive experience in business strategy and operations at entrepreneurial/high performing organizations

  • An outstanding track record of scaling new innovations within large, complex organizations

  • Demonstrated experience of leading in highly matrixed environments to achieve ambitious goals

  • Strong ability to identify, evaluate, and make recommendations on key drivers/criteria for decisions, with some experience evaluating vendor relationships and build-versus-buy decisions

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to interact with all levels of management – internally and externally

  • Strong ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, across lines of difference

  • A strong commitment to expanding educational opportunity for all students

  • Authorization to work in the U.S.

About Our Process  

  • Application review will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled

As a self-sustaining non-profit, we believe in compensating employees equitably in relation to each other, their qualifications, their impact, and the relevant market.  

The hiring range for a new employee in this position is $144,000 to $215,000. College Board differentiates salaries by location so where you live will narrow the portion of this range in which you can expect a salary.  

Your salary will be carefully determined based on your location, relevant experience, the external labor market, and the pay of College Board employees in similar roles. College Board strives to provide our best offer up front based on these criteria.
