This role is in the DroneShield Sydney headquarters in Pyrmont, Sydney. There are approximately 220 staff based in the 4,000sqm facility today, scheduled to grow to approximately 300 staff by end of 2026. Overseas on the ground presence includes Virginia (USA), Denmark, Germany and Dubai, as well as distributors in over 70 countries globally.

About the role

DroneShield is seeking a Embedded Front End Team Lead with relevant experience to join the team in Sydney, NSW.

The position will report to Embedded Software Manager.

The primary focus of the role is to manage and grow a team of 5-6 Embedded API and UI Engineers who are focused on developing and maintaining DroneShield’s Linux based deployed sensors. Working closely with ML/AI, Data Science, RF and infrastructure teams to innovate and enhance DroneShield’s world leading RF detection technology. It represents an exceptional opportunity for a result-driven individual in a new niche but exploding market.

Responsibilities, Duties and Expectations 

• Design and develop the current frontend systems to increase functionality and usability
• Implement new software features from concept to delivery, following systems requirement documents
• Bring experience in testing methodologies and implementation
• Documentation of software architecture and processes
• Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to deliver on user and business requirements
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to team members

Qualifications, Experience and Skills 

• BS degree in Computer Science, Mechatronics, Electronic Engineer or similar technical field of study or equivalent practical experience.  
• At least 5 years of experience as a Front-End Developer 
• Minimum 2 years of experience leading the teams 
• Solid understanding of JavaScript (ideally React as a framework) 
• Comfortable writing Python or Go (to support the team in API integration) 
• Familiarity with Docker and GitLab is favourable 
• You are a lifelong learner. You’re self-taught and continuously learning. You are interested in keeping up with current best practices in your areas of expertise 
• You are experienced working with modern infrastructure and tools 
• You are comfortable running your software in Linux environments 
• You know and care about sound engineering practices like continuous delivery, defensive programming and automated testing 
• Demonstrable concise syntax with an appropriate, but not excessive level of documentation 
• An abundance of ambition and motivation to grow the company and compete with the big players in the industry 
• Fluent in agile methodologies 

 Desirable Skills

• Experience working with web application development 
• Experience with embedded systems 
• Experience with developing large software systems 
• Familiarity with real-time data processing and signal handling 
• Knowledge of security considerations when working with embedded systems
