Job Summary

Network Test Engineer is an important contributor in ensuring that the Telstra network delivers a superior network experience for our consumer and business customers. You use your telecommunications network skills and experience to contribute to specialist analysis, design, development and deployment in specific network technology domains, including how this technology inter-operates with other technologies.
The Network Test Engineer will work on network configuration and mobile backhaul work, specifically related to radio access networks (RAN) and transport technology. The role requires experience with Ericsson, Ciena, and either Juniper or Cisco platforms.

Job Description Summary:

The Network Test Engineer is an important contributor in ensuring that the Telstra network delivers a superior network experience for our consumer and business customers. You use your telecommunications network skills and experience to contribute to specialist analysis, design, development and deployment in specific network technology domains, including how this technology inter-operates with other technologies.

The Network Test Engineer will work on network configuration and mobile backhaul work, specifically related to radio access networks (RAN) and transport technology. The role requires experience with Ericsson, Ciena, and either Juniper or Cisco platforms.

The knowledge, experience, skills, and personal attributes required for the job:

Essential:

  • Experience in network configuration and interworking testing for Transport & Radio Access Network technology
  • 5 years' experience in any one of the following platforms:
    • Ericsson Transport: CSR6673, CSR6675, BB6648, BB6630(CPRI) R2212, R503, AIR3239, AIR6488, AIR5322, AIR3258
    • Ciena: 6500(Packet), 6500(DWDM), 5142
    • Juniper - MX960, MX1003, MX1008, MX10K-LC9600
    • Cisco: ASR1K, ASR9K, Cat6K, Nexus 9k
  • In depth knowledge of telecommunication networks architectures and inter domain connectivity covering Transport, IP Core, Aggregation, Mobiles
  • In depth knowledge of pluggable optics (SFP, XFP, etc) in a multi-vendor environment, including:
    • Coding requirements for Optical Transceivers for OEM functional compatibility / compliance
    • Assessment / testing of optical transceivers deployed in Transport & IP network elements
    • Understanding of optical fibre characteristics and how they impact on transceiver performance

Highly Desirable:

  • Experience with relevant Network Engineering tools / applications:
    • Packet capture: wireshark, IRIS
    • Monitoring & Management: Syslog, Splunk, TWAMP, ENM, T-live, NEM-DMS, Xymon
  • In depth knowledge of Test management and lab configuration, including ability to design & configure end to end test environments and implement Test Object List (TOL) across multiple technology domains
  • Software development skills
    • Proficiency in relevant language / applications (e.g. Python, Grafana, QLIK)
    • Script development
    • Reporting tools & visualization development
    • Automation tools
  • Platform Management/Engineering skills including:
    • Develop lifecycle plans and enhancements for the infrastructure platforms to meet performance and operational requirements.
    • Validate technology solutions and designs through testing within the Transport domain as well as with other Telstra technology domains.
    • Identify and drive product unit cost reduction opportunities through simplification, rationalisation, and smart application of recent technology.
    • Drive efficiency in development and operation of technologies through process improvements and automation opportunities.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a Network Engineering position (service provider or vendor)
  • Awareness of Telstra architecture and technology implementation process
  • A working knowledge of the Product Lifecycle from introduction to augmentation to exit stages and the associated business processes
  • A working knowledge of project management/Agile methodologies
