Overview:

  • 1 x full time (or fraction to be negotiated), ongoing position available within the Discipline of DSAI 

  • Salary Academic Level C ($135,814 -$156,608) or D ($163,538 - $180,166) + 17% Super, depending on qualifications and experience 

  • Based at the City campus, but may be required to travel to other University campuses 

 

About the Roles 
In the School of Computing Technologies, we aim to change student experience by embracing evidence-informed pedagogical strategies, and experimenting with innovative, interactive, digitally enabled student-centered learning experiences. 

 

As a Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor, you will play a key role in advancing the teaching and research efforts of the School and DSAI discipline, contributing across the University and engaging with the community, as well as professional, commercial, and industrial sectors. Your contributions will include delivering high-quality programs and actively participating in research, consulting, and other professional activities. 

In this role, you will develop, lead, and engage in high-quality research projects aligned with the University’s strategic research focus areas. You will aim to secure research funding, produce impactful outputs, and embed your research expertise into the School and DSAI discipline. A strong emphasis will be placed on fostering research leadership, building high-quality, collaborative networks across RMIT, and establishing partnerships with local, national, and global stakeholders. 

Additionally, you may assume responsibility for program management, contributing to the strategic direction and success of the School’s academic programs. 

As the Associate Professor, your role will extend to:  

  • Driving innovative and distinguished contributions to advance the School’s scholarly, research, and professional capabilities at national and international levels. 

  • Teaching and making a significant contribution to teaching and learning in the discipline to improve student learning outcomes. 

  • Contributing significantly to the planning and strategic direction of the School, including taking on academic leadership roles and participating in committees within the School, College, University, and externally, as appropriate. 

  • Potentially being appointed as Deputy Head of School/Dean for a specific discipline or providing strategic leadership in learning and teaching or research and scholarship. 

 

With this appointment we are looking to support the interdisciplinary and innovation objectives of the School and DSAI discipline, including fostering collaborations across the College of STEM and with other parts of the university. We are particularly interested in growing our strengths in areas such as:  

  • Algorithmic transparency/fairness 

  • Reinforcement learning 

 

We also are open to further developing existing capabilities in: 

  • Machine learning, particularly of unstructured data (text, images, graphs) 

  • Digital Health, AI in Health, Computational Biology and Bioinformatics 

  • Data-driven Decision Making 

  • and other areas that complement teaching and research in Computer Science, Data Science and AI. 

 

To be successful in the Level C position, you’ll have: 

  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate large courses and prepare and delivery programs in Computer Science, Data Science and/or Artificial Intelligence at undergraduate and post-graduate levels, including high quality curriculum and program materials and ability to implement innovative approaches to student-centred learning and quality improvement. 

  • Ability to manage a large program or a number of small programs. 

  • Demonstrated ability to support student issues related to effective learning. 

  • Emerging nationally recognised research track record including substantial record of research outputs in high quality outlets and emerging international recognition in Artificial Intelligence or related areas.  

  • Extensive experience in research leadership with the ability to build and develop collaborative research teams, mentor academic staff to deliver high quality outcomes, attract and secure external research funding to sustain research effort and manage funded research projects including complex budgets and reporting requirements. 

  • Extensive experience in supervising higher degree by research candidates to maximise research performance.  

  • Demonstrated ability to manage academic program team, supporting scholarly development of less experienced academic staff. 

  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to financial, governance and quality management systems within a university. 

  • Demonstrated high level of interpersonal, communication and negotiating skills including the ability to consult with senior executives, external bodies, produce executive reports, negotiate agreed directions, outcomes and targets within a collaborative environment. 

 

In addition to the above, to be successful in the Level D position, you’ll have: 

  • Demonstrated ability to direct an award program/s in Computer Science, Data Science, and/or Artificial Intelligence and implement program improvements and innovative approaches to student-centred learning and quality improvement programs. 

  • Nationally recognised research track record including substantial record of research outputs in high quality outlets and emerging international recognition in Artificial Intelligence or related areas.  

  • Demonstrated ability to lead scholarly development and manage and supervise academic teams and members. 

  • Proven ability as an effective member of a management team that develops and achieves shared goals and objectives. 

 

Qualifications 

Mandatory for Level C and D: PhD in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or other relevant field
