Grade and Salary: Grade 6, £30,505 - £35,880 per annum
FTE and working pattern: 1 FTE, 35hrs per week, Monday - Friday
Holiday Entitlement: 33 days annual leave plus 9 buildings closed days (and Christmas Eve when it falls on a weekday)
Purpose of Role
The Associate Data Analyst will have responsibility for supporting the BI Analyst, to whom the role holder will report, and Head of Research & Business Intelligence in the sourcing, analysis, production and communication of data, forecasts and reports in relation to that underpin the University’s strategic business processes and activities. They will also build and maintain the forecasting models and reporting dashboards, drawing on highly developed skills in these areas. The post-holder will champion/advocate data- and evidence-based reporting. They will also be a source of specialist advice on data analysis, reporting and analytical systems, particularly through their knowledge of MS PowerBI, within the Directorate and wider University as part of our progression in the adoption of new digital technologies. In addition, the post-holder will, as relevant, represent SPP&P internally and externally and build a network of specialist contacts within and outside the University.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Supporting the BI Analyst with the University’s Data Insights Project which seeks to create and develop dashboards from the institutions data lake.
- Support the Head of Research & Business Intelligence in creating dashboards that replace existing flat file reports
- Development and maintenance of appropriate documentation in relation to all of the above
- Keeping abreast of specialised information systems/software in support of above; contributing to the development of an integrated 'business intelligence' service within the wider department
- Communicating with colleagues across the global institution in support of the business processes and use of Power BI dashboards
- Networking with user community in University to keep alert to feedback and needs, and with external communities to be alert to current developments and issues
- Other projects as agreed from time to time, and reporting to the BI Analyst on projects to which the role holder has been assigned
Essential & Desirable Criteria
Essential
- The role-holder should have a first degree or equivalent featuring significant relevant numerical and analytical content, with experience of creating dashboards in MS Power BI
- Excellent IT skills with experience across the MS Office suite and advanced working knowledge of PowerBI (or similar BI and visual analytics platform) and Excel
- Demonstrable experience of extracting, analysing and interpreting data to produce reports and dashboards in support of management activities
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including data visualisation and presentation skills, with the ability to present complex management information in an accessible way for a diverse audience
- Analytical problem-solving skills
- Well-developed interpersonal skills
- Demonstrable excellent customer service, with a professional and proactive approach
- Demonstrable ability to work quickly, flexibly and accurately in a dynamic, changing and pressured environment
Desirable
- Extensive experience working with a medium level of autonomy and responsibility in a management information / planning role
- Experience of working in Higher Education in a similar management information / planning environment as outlined above

Based at the Edinburgh campus, Strategic Planning, Performance & Projects (SPP&P) has overall responsibility for facilitating development of the University’s strategy and Strategic Plan; management of the University’s annual planning and budgeting cycle through the Annual Planning round and Student Numbers Plan; negotiation and production of the University’s Outcome Agreement with SFC; provision of both external horizon-scanning and internal performance information at all levels and across all aspects of the University’s activities; management of/participation in various projects.
