What is the role?
Applications are sought from suitably qualified applicants wishing to be considered for the role of Data Scientist (Band 6) within the AFP, Digital Forensics (DF) Complex Evidence Review and Enrichment Team (CERET).
DF CERET is a growing team who use forensic, legal technology and data analysis to manage, analyse, review and gain critical insights into large volumes of Electronically Stored Information (ESI) in support of AFP investigations. We have a team of high-performing talented people who are passionate about what they do.
The successful candidate(s) will be working alongside Data Analysts, DF Examiners and other DF specialists. Initially you will be assisting with the preparation, enrichment, automation and delivery of ESI material to multiple stakeholders including investigators, lawyers and partner agencies through Forensic and Legal Technology software. Successful applicant(s) will also contribute to the development of advanced data techniques and design, including predictive coding.
The role is varied in the day-to-day activities and may involve coding scripts, enriching data and automating workflows to improve CERET efficiencies.
You will also be required to contribute to the achievement of outcomes in accordance with the regulatory framework, the AFP Code of Conduct and the AFP Governance Instruments. It is expected that the successful applicant will deliver on the core responsibilities and meet any requirements of the position as outlined below.
What will you do?
- Develop enrichments and insights into large volumes of electronically stored information (incl. documents, emails, etc.)
- Enhancing processes through design, development, and implementation of automated workflows to streamline tasks and reduce manual efforts.
- Performing quality assurance over data at the beginning and end of investigative review.
- Evaluating the potential of emerging technologies including AI, machine learning and automation.
- Collaborating with Commonwealth partners with eDiscovery capabilities.
- Staying up to date with industry trends, advances in technology and relevant case law.
Essential Requirements
- You must be an Australian Citizen at the time of application;
- A Negative Vetting 2 (Top Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one;
- Industry experience and/or Bachelor's degree in a related field is desirable (e.g., Data Science, Computer Science, Information Technology);
- Programming skills in one or more programming languages with the aptitude to program in other languages as required (SQL and Python preferred);
- Ability to plan, drive and deliver on multiple concurrent tasks;
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills;
- Ability to demonstrate initiative and self-management;
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal;
- Knowledge of automation and AI principles.
- Candidates will be required to successfully complete a Psychological assessment to be able to progress through this process.
Desirable Requirements
The following skills and/or experience would be highly regarded:
- Experience using Legal Technology software such as Nuix or Relativity;
- Experience performing data analysis with R & Python;
- Familiarity with eDiscovery and the Electronic Discovery Reference Model (EDRM);
- Experience with Elastic databases.
Additional Information
* This role attracts a composite allowance in recognition of expanded working hours, normal patterns of attendance and shift patterns (such as afternoon shifts, weekends and Designated Public Holidays) that are required under the Operations working pattern. In accordance with the AFP Enterprise Agreement 2017- 2020, an employee who is required to work in accordance with the Operations working pattern will receive a Core Composite of 22% in addition to their Base Salary which will count as salary for superannuation. The Commissioner has the authority to remove a composite from a role.

Interview

Using the relevant AFP work level standards as a guide, you may be asked a range of questions to demonstrate your skills and abilities. These could include behavioural based scenario questions.
You can prepare for the interview by:
- reviewing your responses to the selection criteria, picking a few additional examples to use in the interview
- participating in a mock interview using the selection criteria to think of possible questions.
Finger Printing
AFP employees are required to have their finger prints taken. This requirement will be undertaken at the time an offer of employment is made.
COVID - 19 Mandate
AFP employees are required to have received a minimum of two COVID-19 vaccinations (or one dose if the Janssen vaccine was used). Satisfactory proof of vaccination status will be required at the time an offer of employment is made.
