Junior Applied Scientist - Zalando Payments (all genders)

THE ROLE & THE TEAM

As Junior Applied Scientist for Zalando Payments, you will build, evaluate, verify, and deploy machine learning algorithms that allow our customers to pay in a secure and seamless way. Fashion retail imposes many interesting challenges on the payment experience that we address through tailored deferred payment options and other products. The predictive algorithms you will build in this role assess the pre-order risk of offering deferred payments, and you’ll work closely with software engineers to put those algorithms into production. You will make sure the product complies with the demanding and high standards of the fintech industry.

WHAT WE’D LOVE YOU TO DO (AND LOVE DOING)

• Research and develop machine learning solutions to solve business problems such as payment risk assessment and forecasting of various KPIs. 

• Make sense of the messy patterns within data. You thrive on using analytics approaches to understand the problem you’re working on, and being a data detective.

• Collaborate with engineers to put machine learning algorithms into production.

• Learn and develop, and share your knowledge with your colleagues. We are excited to teach you new technologies and approaches, and to learn from you.

WE’D LOVE TO MEET YOU IF…

• You have a degree in statistics, physics, biology, machine learning, data science, economics or another relevant field. 

• You have a solid foundation of knowledge in mathematics and statistical methods. You can easily explain the importance of a p-value, and what are its pitfalls. 

• You have experience and good understanding of basic machine learning algorithms. You have an interest in learning how to improve/perfect and generally build more performant machine learning products.

• We are working in a big and complex environment and with many stakeholders. We expect you to be able to translate business needs into machine learning concepts.  Great communication skills are needed to help non-technical colleagues understand applied science concepts.

• You bring excellent problem-solving skills, with a logical and pragmatic attitude.

• Ideally, you are familiar with the Python's best practices. You also know how to make sense of data using SQL and relevant Python packages (pandas, spark).
