About the Role
We are seeking a highly skilled tax professional with deep expertise in tax accounting and financial reporting, with a particular focus on forecasting under ASC 740. This position presents an exciting opportunity to play a strategic role in shaping OpenAI's financial framework through advanced data management and tax planning initiatives.
As a Senior Manager of Tax Accounting and Forecasts, you will oversee the strategic planning and implementation of tax accounting initiatives that support OpenAI's financial objectives and regulatory obligations. Your primary responsibilities will include managing income tax accruals in compliance with ASC 740. This entails preparing and reviewing tax provision calculations, assessing the recognition and measurement of deferred tax assets and liabilities, ensuring compliance with regulatory reporting standards, and collaborating with auditors to support financial statement disclosures. This involves ensuring precise reporting of deferred tax assets and liabilities, and overseeing financial statement disclosures in accordance with US GAAP and local statutory standards. This role necessitates close collaboration with cross-functional teams to enhance tax forecasting methods, provide actionable insights, and maintain robust SOX 404 controls. A strong foundation in tax accounting principles, financial modeling, and regulatory frameworks such as US GAAP, IFRS, and SOX compliance is crucial, along with the ability to provide strategic guidance and valuable financial recommendations to senior leadership.

Have extensive experience in corporate income tax return compliance and/or income tax accounting under ASC 740.

Possess a strong technical foundation in SQL, Python, and machine learning methodologies.

This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.
In this role, you will:
Lead the implementation and ongoing oversight of SOX 404 controls for income taxes, ensuring robust audit preparedness through comprehensive documentation and stakeholder engagement.
Conduct thorough assessments and adjustments of deferred tax assets based on evolving taxable income projections, aligning financial strategies with organizational goals and market trends.
Oversee the preparation and validation of financial statement disclosures in compliance with US GAAP and local statutory requirements, including effective tax rate (ETR) analysis, tax payable, and deferred tax reconciliations.
Regularly update and maintain risk logs for management reporting, collaborating closely with the Senior Analyst to refine predictive modeling capabilities.
Direct tax forecasting processes, delivering strategic insights that integrate tax planning with the organization's broader financial objectives.
Ensure the precise preparation and review of income tax accruals in accordance with ASC 740 standards, maintaining compliance for both domestic and international tax reporting.
Develop and enhance forecasting models that incorporate tax cash flows, effective tax rates (ETR), and deferred tax components, adapting to regulatory and economic changes.
Evaluate the impact of new accounting standards and policy changes on tax operations and compliance, while continuously improving SOX control frameworks to mitigate financial reporting risks.
You might thrive in this role if you:
Have at least 10 years of progressive experience in tax functions, with a focus on corporate income tax, partnerships, and international tax matters.
Exhibit strong leadership and communication abilities, enabling effective collaboration with tax, finance, and executive teams to support strategic decision-making.
Ensure adherence to SOX compliance frameworks and regulatory standards by implementing robust governance practices.
Possess deep expertise in managing global income tax risks with a commitment to integrity, focusing on compliance and strategic alignment with organizational objectives through best practices.
Demonstrate advanced technical proficiency in financial modeling, specifically in forecasting tax cash flows, effective tax rates (ETR), and deferred taxes, with comprehensive knowledge of US GAAP and IFRS tax accounting principles.
Have a proven track record in leading tax forecasting initiatives for key metrics, working closely with cross-functional teams to refine predictive models and synchronize tax planning with broader financial strategies.
Bring extensive experience in the preparation and review of income tax accruals in compliance with ASC 740, ensuring precise recognition of deferred tax assets and liabilities.
Take a proactive approach to enhancing and refining SOX control procedures by regularly conducting internal audits, implementing automated controls, and staying updated with evolving regulatory requirements to address risks related to financial misstatements and control deficiencies.
