Company overview:

Flagship Labs 109, Inc. (FL109) is a privately held, early-stage technology company pioneering the use of artificial intelligence, physics and hardware to transform the way we see biology. FL109 was conceived by Flagship Pioneering, which brings the courage, long-term vision, and resources needed to realize unreasonable results. Become part of our mission-driven team and help envision the future of science.

The Role:

FL109 is seeking an innovative Machine Learning Researcher to help design and develop cutting-edge AI solutions to transform how we see molecular biology. You are excited about advancing the boundaries of what’s possible with AI, enjoy tackling complex problems, and excel at taking projects from concept to deployment. Your role will focus on exploring novel approaches, building high-performance models, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to achieve breakthrough results.

How You Will Contribute:

  • Research & Development: Design and test innovative machine learning algorithms, with a focus on solving real-world challenges in structural biology.
  • LLM Exploration: Conduct research on large language models, including fine-tuning and developing new applications that leverage their potential.
  • Prototyping: Rapidly prototype and evaluate new methods, demonstrating their potential for real-world application.
  • Model Innovation: Focus on developing models that handle low signal-to-noise data effectively. Expertise in areas like computer vision, generative modeling, or physics-informed AI is highly desirable.
  • Collaboration: Work with engineers, experimentalists, and other researchers to translate ideas into actionable solutions. Provide insights and recommendations to optimize workflows.
  • Publications & Insights: Stay up-to-date with the latest ML research and contribute to advancing the field by applying novel methods to challenging datasets.
  • Tool Development: Support the development of tools that integrate AI seamlessly into experimental and computational pipelines.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • Strong research background with publications in top ML conferences (e.g., NeurIPS, ICLR, ICML) or interdisciplinary journals (e.g., Nature, Nature Methods, Science).
  • Strong expertise in machine learning research, including model development, experimentation, and evaluation.
  • Proficiency in Python and ML frameworks like PyTorch.
  • Experience working with noisy, complex datasets; knowledge of computer vision techniques is a significant advantage.
  • Familiarity with cloud computing environments (e.g., AWS) and tools for large-scale model training.
  • Proven ability to take an idea from research to a functional solution or production-ready implementation.
  • Excellent communication skills, with a passion for interdisciplinary collaboration and solving impactful problems.
  • Curiosity and drive to work at the frontier of AI and science, contributing to breakthroughs in structural biology.
