We have an exciting opportunity for a Data Scientist to join the Data Science Team in the Planning and Information Office. This role is ideal for a Data Scientist who is comfortable with the complexities of the University data environment and is eager to apply their skills in developing and fine-tuning machine learning models, automating data processes, and conducting advanced data analysis.
This role will work closely with stakeholders across the University and within Planning & Information to develop advanced analytical solutions to a variety of strategic performance questions. We take an iterative, cross-functional approach to the development of solutions with data science leading the way with complex analyses and through to their operationalisation through our business intelligence ecosystem.

Please note this is a full-time (37.5 hours/ week) permanent position, with a salary range of $89,000 – $95,000 depending on skills and experience.
Mō tō mātou rōpū | About the team
The Planning and Information Office is part of the Vice-Chancellor’s Office, and coordinates the University’s planning and accountability activities, as well as liaising with the Tertiary Education Commission and Ministry of Education. It provides oversight of the University’s reporting strategy and decision support information and provides analysis and information that supports the University’s strategic and tactical decision-making and academic quality assurance.

The main accountabilities for this role include:
- Contributing to the implementation of the University Data Strategy and the development roadmap for the provision of data and insights.
- Managing the planning, design, and execution of the data science programme of work.
- Contributing to the maintenance of a high-quality internal information repository.
- Guiding and supporting the development of advanced analytics solutions across Planning & Information teams.
He kōrero mōu | About you
You will have qualifications and expertise in applying advanced analytic techniques to university problems. You should understand the ethical use of data to address strategic questions and contribute to cross-functional teams. Essential skills include proficiency in Python and R, experience with relational databases and data warehousing, and the ability to perform exploratory data analysis using visualizations. Strong communication skills to convey findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders are required. Additionally, familiarity with Computer Science terminology, experience in IT or Computer Science projects, and prior work in similar roles is necessary.
