Scope of the work
In Radio Access Networks (RAN), transport block decoding is a fundamental operation with significant resource requirements and tight time constraints. Given today's concepts of RAN disaggregation and virtualization as well as L1 accelerator concepts (e.g., “inline” and “lookaside”), the distributed unit (DU) resource management becomes ever more crucial and also needs to consider energy efficiency requirements.
Now the deployed solutions by the operators are not considering resource management and to respect the time thresholds there are no limitations on resource utilizations. This approach is not scalable and energy greedy. For a more scalbale and less energy-greedy management of resources, the impact of the most relevant environment variables (such as, Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR), Modulation and Coding Rate, Channel Quality Indicator (CQI), Block Error Rate) on resource consumption required for the decoding operation needs to be understood. The technical objectives of this work hence comprise
- Using already existing functions of Matlab to study the impact of the environment on the decoders reseource consumption. For each defined environment, the objective would be to obtain the statistics of the decoder, i.e., number of decoding cycles, success ratio, etc.
- Introducing breakout points to use DPDK decoding capabilities instead of Matlab and also study also the energy consumption. In a next step, these results may be combined in a dataset to further analyze the feasibility of an ML-enabled approach to resource management.
Your skills and experience
We are looking for highly motivated candidates who are enthusiastic about developing breakthrough innovations and participate in cutting-edge research in Nokia. Applicants should fulfill the following qualifications:
- A bachelor degree in communications engineering, information theory, or computer science with a grade of at least 2.0 (German grade system equivalent),
- Basic knowledge in communication networks and signal processing
- Proficiency in relevant programming languages for quantitative evaluations (e.g., Matlab, Python, C), as well as experience in software engineering (e.g. Design Patterns, object oriented programming, etc.)
- Highly proficient in spoken and written English,
- Ability to work independently,
- Ready to collaborate in a diverse team with members of different cultural backgrounds,
- Willingness and ability to get engaged in novel disruptive research areas, which will require the applicant to learn new skills.
