Project description: 

The aim of the project is to develop a tool based on deep learning to improve the quality of video in two aspects: increase the resolution and synthesis of bokeh effect (keeping the subject sharp while blurring the background). For this purpose, generative techniques will be investigated (such as adversarial training, autoregressive models, variational autoencoders, diffusion models), which should be capable of generating sharp details in the focus plane that are temporally consistent with the motion in the video. The designed tool has to meet computational cost constraints that allow its practical implementation. 

Main research field: Computer Vision, Video processing, Generative models, Deep learning.

Tasks to be performed:

  • Literature study to prepare a report on the state of the art in generative methods for video super-resolution and bokeh synthesis (WP1).

  • Design and implementation of a quantitative and qualitative evaluation protocol  (WP2).

  • Design of data sets (possibly including synthetically generated data) for training and evaluation (WP2).

  • Design, implementation and training of generative models for video. Tests on simple datasets to evaluate feasibility (WP3). 

  • Adaptation of the models to the complexities of real cases and optimization of the quality of the result (WP4). 

  • Reduction of the computational cost of the solution, affecting the quality of the results as little as possible (WP5).

 

The duration of these tasks is estimated over a period of 12 months.

Group and complement: Group 1 Level u

Dedication and working hours: Full time (35h/week).

Planned remuneration approx: 37.247,08 € gross per year

Qualifications

Requirements: 

  • Bachelor degree.

The expected start date is April 1st, 2025, the job is in Barcelona.

Selection criteria: The selection of the candidates will be made through evaluation of the curriculum and, where appropriate, with the carrying out a test and/or interview. Valuation will be as follows:

1- Academic Training (0-20 points).

  • Academic background in audiovisual systems engineering, data science engineering, computer science or mathematics.

2- Other professional training and experience, adequacy to the proposed profile (0-60 points):

  • Research experience in at least one of the following domains: computer vision,image and/or video processing, generative models for image generation, machine learning, deep learning.

  • Excellent programming skills and experience in developing deep learning pipelines using python libraries such as pytorch and tensorflow.

3- Other merits (0-20 points):

  • Good communication abilities.

  • Fluent level of English, both written as well as spoken.

The minimum score to pass the selection process is 80 points. The candidate with the highest score in the selection process will be offered the job.
