The Position
In Roche Pharma Research and Early Development (pRED), we discover and develop molecules as novel therapeutics. One class of molecules, known as covalent inhibitors, are of particular interest since it has the potential to target otherwise undruggable proteins and to achieve outstanding efficacy and safety profiles.
One of our ongoing research activities is to integrate heterogenous biological and chemical data to prioritize protein targets that are suitable for a covalent target approach. For this purpose, we look for a motivated bachelor/master student with a solid educational background and hands-on experience of computational biology or chemistry to support our research.
The internship position is located in the Data & Analytics department in pRED and the work is embedded in an interdisciplinary team.
The Opportunity:
Curate and integrate heterogeneous biological and chemical data
Build statistical and machine-learning models to predict the propensity of covalent binding
Create a prototypical interface for users to assess harmonized data and predictions
Impact and main responsibilities:
As an intern, you will be supported and guided by an interdisciplinary team. You are expected to work diligently and independently, and are encouraged to approach the problem creatively. Your main responsibilities include data curation, data integration, model building, and critical analysis of the results. The output will be used by other research scientists for rationale modality selection.
Who You are:
You have earned a Bachelor's or Master's degree within the past 12 months compared to the start date, or you are currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's degree program in a relevant field (e.g. computational biology, computational chemistry, etc.)
Strong knowledge of biochemistry or protein biology, and/or chemistry is mandatory.
Strong skills of problem-solving with the Python programming language are mandatory.
Experience working with MongoDB or other document-based databases is preferred.
Experience with data curation and data integration is preferred.
Proficiency in both written and spoken English.
Additional Information: Start date: March 2025 or upon availability for a period of 6 months. Please indicate your ideal starting date on your application.
Location: This position is based in Basel, Switzerland.
Your application: Please upload your CV, with at least two references, and a cover letter. Both documents are mandatory. Optionally, you can include at least one software repository of your previous work in your CV.
Due to regulations, non-EU/EFTA citizens have to provide a certificate from the university stating that an internship is mandatory and the length of the mandatory internship as part of the application documents.
