Overview:
We seek an accomplished and visionary leader to join Johns Hopkins University (JHU) as a Professor and Director of the Precision Infectious Diseases and Data Science Initiative. This role spans dual appointments in the Department of Medicine/Division of Infectious Diseases and the Department of International Health. The ideal candidate will drive cutting-edge clinical and translational research, foster interdisciplinary collaborations, and lead initiatives at the intersection of infectious diseases, data science, and global health.
Primary Responsibilities:
Department of Medicine/Division of Infectious Diseases
- Lead Research Portfolio:
- Serve as the Principal Investigator (PI) for externally funded research programs focused on infectious diseases.
- Direct Precision Infectious Diseases and Data Science Initiative:
- Provide strategic leadership for initiatives in data science, AI, and precision medicine aimed at addressing antimicrobial resistance (AMR), tuberculosis, HIV, and emerging infections.
- Collaborate with JHU’s Department of Medicine data science and AI teams to integrate machine learning and AI in clinical and translational research.
- Expand Global Research Networks:
- Leverage partnerships in Brazil and Latin America to position JHU as a central hub for cross-national infectious disease research.
- Establish exchange programs and global health convenings for faculty and trainees.
- Foster Interdepartmental Collaboration:
- Build partnerships between the Division of Infectious Diseases, Bloomberg School of Public Health, and Whiting School of Engineering to support multi-departmental initiatives.
- Mentorship:
- Mentor junior faculty, fellows, and graduate students in infectious disease research.
- Engagement:
- Actively participate in relevant division and departmental activities to advance the mission of the ID Division and DOM.
Department of International Health
- Leadership in Climate Change and Global Health:
- Provide strategic guidance and expert oversight for faculty initiatives at the nexus of climate change and global health.
- Coordinate high-impact convenings and interdisciplinary research projects.
- Expand Research Networks:
- Strengthen collaborations with Global South institutions, emphasizing equitable research agendas.
- Resource Mobilization:
- Advocate for climate change and global health research with funding agencies and stakeholders.
- Develop innovative fundraising strategies to support research and capacity-building efforts.
- Build Interdisciplinary Data Science Programs:
Collaborate with JHU’s Whiting School of Engineering and Department of Biostatistics to secure funding and expand public health and data science initiatives.
Qualifications
- A PhD, MD, or equivalent advanced degree in a relevant field.
- Proven track record of externally funded research in infectious diseases, data science, and global health.
- Demonstrated expertise in climate change and its intersection with public health.
- Strong leadership experience with the ability to inspire and mentor multidisciplinary teams.
- Established global research partnerships, particularly in Latin America and the Global South.

The referenced salary range represents the minimum and maximum salaries for this position and is based on Johns Hopkins University's good faith belief at the time of posting. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
