Position Summary:

The Director of Wildfire Risk Mitigation and Analytics is responsible for identifying and assessing risk as well as developing effective mitigation strategies and plans to drive achievement of Xcel Energy wildfire strategy and objectives. This position is also responsible for ensuring awareness of these risk and compliance issues across the organizations and provides oversight on operational risk management and guidance on corporate risk tools, policies, practices and processes. In addition, this role responsible for the development the various wildfire risk models using a coordinated process and common framework and overseeing the effectiveness of wildfire risk mitigation programs to achieve risk reduction.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for defining, developing and maintaining wildfire risk models, partnering with operations to ensure the accuracy of our distribution and transmission asset databases, assist with the development of wildfire mitigation plans and quantitative risk analysis and ranking of mitigation activities and technology adoption to manage and/or mitigate the impacts of wildfires.
  • Leads the quantitative risk management analysis function to prioritize and risk rank mitigation activities, and to validate risk mitigation as work is completed. Quantify and track work completion against regulatory approved mitigation plans. Crafts new and complex data models to facilitate business decisions.
  • Informs risk mitigation plan development, ensuring a complete list of risk event definitions, risk drivers, consequences, and risk scores, are incorporated into the prioritization. Assesses effectiveness of existing risk controls and mitigations through quantitative analysis and model scenarios.
  • Develops and implements a risk and compliance management dashboard to provide ongoing visibility into risk mitigation activities and to provide regular progress updates on Compliance Action plans and Risk Mitigation plans.
  • Develops and maintains effective relationships with other business units risk and compliance managers to understand the interdependencies between risks and identify mutually beneficial mitigation strategies.
  • Oversees development of executive presentations on risk assessment, mitigation strategies, and performance against plans.
  • Represents Xcel Energy to outside organizations such as regulators or industry associations regarding wildfire risk trends, common issues, and best practices. Represent Xcel Energy as a witness in regulatory filings. Maintains industry contacts for benchmarking and sharing information.
  • Effectively lead, manage and support Wildfire Risk team. Ensuring standards and expectations are established. Drive strategy, performance and safety mindset.


Minimum Requirements:

  • Minimum of 7 years of utility experience and/or risk management with quantitative analysis.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Engineering, Business Administration, Economics or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Strong project management experience and ability to deliver results.
  • Experience leading and/or managing cross-functional teams, organization, or workgroup
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills. Proven track record of working collaboratively across departments.
  • Strong communication skills are required to convey technical information to diverse audiences.
  • Graduate Degree in Mathematics, Engineering, Economics, Business Administration, Data Science preferred.
  • Operational experience in oil and gas, natural gas and/or electric operations business preferred.
  • Regulatory knowledge and experience with communications to varied groups, including senior leadership and regulators preferred.
  • Familiarity with data science and developing ML products that provide business value preferred.
  • Experience leading teams of data scientists and quantitative analysts preferred.

Non-Bargaining

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $144,800.00 to $236,000.00 per year
