Job Description Summary:

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Kansas Medical Center seeks to recruit a research scientist with a strong background in digital and computational pathology. This role will be integral in supporting the department’s digital pathology initiatives and will also focus on developing innovative digital solutions that have a direct impact on clinical workflows. The successful candidate will provide professional expertise to support the department’s transformation into digital pathology workflows, collect and manage large-scale pathology datasets, and develop and apply cutting-edge machine learning techniques into clinical workflow.

Job Description:

Job Duties Outlined:

  • Software development and validation: Design, develop, and validate software-as-a-medical device to assist tasks in pathology analysis. Conduct laboratory developed test to validate novel and commercial digital pathology hardware and software.
  • Deep-learning model development: Design, train and evaluate state-of-the-art deep learning methods for pathology tasks of image segmentation, feature detection, and classification.
  • Data curation: Develop and curate novel whole slide pathology image datasets and patient data from the University of Kansas Health System and KUMC, from preprocessing to model deployment.
  • Collaboration and research development: Collaborate with clinicians, trainees, and researchers across the department to design and implement computational pathology methods tailored for specific diseases (e.g., breast cancer). Conduct research on applying computational pathology methods to enhance diagnostic accuracy, treatment planning, and survival analysis.
  • Technical support: Provide expertise for selecting, deploying, managing, and maintaining digital pathology image management systems, storage and network systems, and support the department’s digital transformation efforts.
  • Grant writing, intellectual property, publication, and presentation: Prepare and submit external funding proposals and contribute to intellectual property development in computational pathology and medical imaging technologies. Lead the writing and submission of manuscripts to high-impact journals. Presenting research findings at national and international conferences.
  • Mentorship: Train pathology residents, fellows and medical students in computational pathology techniques.

Required Qualifications:

Education: PhD in electrical and computer engineering, computer science, or a closely related field, with a focus on computational pathology

Work Experience:

  • Experience in computational pathology and medical imaging: large-scale pathology datasets and deep learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, or Keras) for whole slide image analysis
  • Experience in human factors engineering/human-computer interaction, user interface design (UI), user experience (UX) for validation of digital and computational pathology software

Preferred Qualifications:

Work Experience:

  • Experience in working collaboratively with pathologists and trainees
  • Experience in successful intellectual property applications in digital or computational pathology
  • A track record of publications in digital pathology imaging, computational pathology, and human factors engineering/human computer interaction

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
