BD Life Sciences is currently seeking a Staff AI/ML Algorithm Scientist to join our exciting and growing Advanced Technologies Group. At BD Life Sciences you will have the opportunity to create next-generation machine learning models to advance the state-of-the-art in cell analysis.
The Staff AI/ML Algorithm Scientist, Advanced Technologies is responsible for the design, development and documentation of machine learning models for high-dimensional data analysis, image processing and classification, and characterization of high performance scientific instruments The successful candidate will be responsible for researching, recommending, estimating, prototyping, and/or initiating the development of products, methodologies, and technologies that will help maintain BD Biosciences as the worldwide leader in the field of flow cytometry and single cell analysis. Additional responsibilities will include working with multi-functional teams to use new computational abilities across multiple stages of the flow cytometry workflow, ranging from reagent development and panel design to informatics. The candidate must have demonstrated experience in the design and implementation of machine learning models, including both deep learning and classical techniques. The ideal candidate will also have a significant track record of innovation in these areas.
The Staff AI/ML Algorithm Scientist, Advanced Technologies is responsible for defining, determining, and implementing technical architectures for software tools and complex systems. The successful candidate will be regularly involved in key technical decisions alongside the most senior members of BD Biosciences’ R&D team as a member of the Advanced Technology Group, which helps define and implement the next generation of cytometry products. They expect to receive limited direction and are expected to help set their own goals through knowledge of the Segment and Business Unit strategy, plans, and goals.
Job Responsibilities:
- Invent, design, prototype, and implement machine learning models for high-throughput image classification and processing
- Combine first-principles modeling, simulation techniques, and data-driven inference to build useful predictive models spanning the hardware, software, reagent, and biology domains
- Research, evaluate, and recommend new technologies and methodologies
- Recommend development of AI/ML infrastructure
- Collaborate with software and firmware developers and engineers to ensure that algorithm designs are feasible and deployable
- Work with bench scientists to design, execute, and analyze training and validation single-cell datasets
- Collaborate in requirements definition and establishing software specifications.
- Present results, findings, and outcomes of work to Director-, VP-, and higher-level executives on a regular basis.
- Present novel results at relevant scientific meetings and industry tradeshows.
- Work closely and comfortably within a small team of highly experienced technical leaders as part of the Advanced Technology Group.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Advanced degree (PhD or Masters) in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Bioengineering, Mathematics, Physics, or related subject area
- Minimum 5 years of relevant academic and/or industry experience in algorithm development.
- Experience in Machine Learning/Deep Learning for computer vision tasks such as classification, denoising, and segmentation.
- Demonstrated proficiency in using deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow to manage machine learning pipelines.
- Proven experience in optimizing model performance for deployment on edge devices. Familiarity with hardware-accelerated computational techniques.
- Strong background in linear algebra, signal processing, and statistical analysis. Experience in using mathematical modeling and physical reasoning to analyze noise behavior in complex systems.
- Experience with software development for data science or AI/ML in a team environment. Strong understanding of standard processes in writing efficient and maintainable Python code.
- Extensive experience and proven track record of innovation in optimization algorithm design or high-dimensional data analysis
- Experience with software development for data science or AI/ML in a team environment using Python, Java, R, and/or C/C++
- Experience in multi-functional collaboration.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Assets:
- Experience working with single-cell data, including flow cytometry data, single-cell multiomics data
- Experience with nonlinear, nonconvex, and/or combinatorial multi-objective optimization problems
- Experience with data engineering practices and utilizing cloud computing platforms for data management and machine learning solutions.
- Experience in design considerations for hardware-accelerated computational techniques
- Familiarity with model-driven and data-driven algorithm design principles
- Experience with systems modeling
