The Model Governance  & Monitoring Director is responsible for leading the governance, compliance, and ethical oversight of machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) models within Paysafe. This role is crucial in ensuring that the models developed and deployed are robust, transparent, fair, and aligned with both business objectives and regulatory standards. The director will lead efforts to mitigate risk, monitor model performance, and establish policies that promote accountability and ethical practices in the use of AI and ML technologies.

How we work:

We follow a hybrid working model, spending an average of three days per week at our office location. The office is located in Gresham Street next to St Paul’s cathedral with easy access and transport links via St Paul’s, Bank, Cannon Street, City Thameslink, Liverpool Street, Farringdon, Mansion House.

The impact you will have:

1. Model Governance Framework Development:
   • Design and implement a comprehensive governance framework for overseeing the lifecycle of AI and ML models from development through deployment and monitoring.
   • Establish policies and procedures for AI and ML model creation, deployment, validation, and periodic audits, ensuring compliance with internal and external regulations.
2. Ethical Oversight and Compliance:
   • Ensure that all AI and ML models are developed and deployed in compliance with relevant regulatory requirements, industry standards, and ethical guidelines, including EU Artificial Intelligence Act, GDPR, CCPA, and other privacy laws.
   • Collaborate with legal, compliance, and risk teams to ensure that AI and ML models align with the organization’s ethical standards and governance best practices.
   • Ensure fairness, transparency, and accountability in AI and ML systems, addressing concerns such as bias, discrimination, and unintended consequences.
3. Risk Management and Monitoring:
   • Oversee the risk management process for AI and ML models, including identifying, mitigating, and monitoring potential risks (e.g., model drift, security vulnerabilities).
   • Develop and implement systems for continuous model monitoring, performance tracking, and auditing to ensure models are operating as expected and remain compliant over time.
   • Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) for model performance, fairness, and accountability.
4. Cross-Functional Leadership:
   • Lead and mentor teams of data scientists, machine learning engineers, AI specialists, and compliance professionals to ensure alignment in model development and governance processes.
   • Foster collaboration between technical and non-technical teams (e.g., legal, risk, product, and operations) to address governance challenges and align AI/ML projects with organizational goals.
   • Advocate for best practices in model governance across all AI and ML initiatives at Paysafe.
5. Stakeholder Communication and Education:
   • Communicate AI and ML model governance policies and practices to senior leadership, providing regular updates on model performance, compliance status, and risks.
   • Develop educational programs to raise awareness of AI/ML governance issues and train employees on ethical considerations, model transparency, and regulatory compliance.
   • Engage with external stakeholders (e.g., regulatory bodies, industry groups, and clients) to stay informed on evolving regulatory trends and maintain the organization's governance standards.
6. AI & ML Model Auditing and Validation:
   • Oversee internal and external audits of AI and ML models to ensure compliance with governance standards and ethical guidelines.
   • Validate AI and ML models to assess whether they meet the required ethical, technical, and business standards before deployment.
   • Manage model explainability and interpretability efforts to ensure that models are understandable by stakeholders and meet transparency requirements.
7. Innovation and Continuous Improvement:
   • Stay abreast of emerging trends, research, and technological advancements in AI, ML, and model governance to ensure the organization remains at the forefront of ethical and regulatory compliance in the field.
   • Promote continuous improvement by encouraging innovative governance practices and refining model validation, monitoring, and auditing processes.

What we’re looking for:

• Education: Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, Law, or a related field.
• Experience:
  • 10+ years of experience in AI, ML, or data science, with at least 5 years in a leadership or governance-focused role.
  • Strong track record of overseeing AI/ML model governance, ethics, risk management, and compliance.
  • Proven experience in developing and implementing AI/ML governance frameworks, policies, and best practices.
  • Experience working with regulatory frameworks, privacy laws, and AI ethics guidelines (e.g., GDPR, CCPA, OECD Principles).

• Skills:
  • In-depth understanding of machine learning algorithms, AI technologies, and data science techniques.
  • Strong knowledge of AI/ML governance practices, model validation, and risk management frameworks.
  • Expertise in AI/ML ethics, including fairness, accountability, transparency, and bias mitigation.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to translate complex technical issues to business and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to oversee complex, cross-functional projects.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience working in banking and/or digital payments and with compliance teams.
• Familiarity with AI/ML auditing tools, model performance monitoring tools, and risk management platforms.
• Experience in developing or contributing to industry-wide AI/ML governance standards or frameworks.
