The Opportunity
This position works out of our San Diego, California location on site daily in the Infectious Disease group.
Abbott is currently looking for an Innovative Senior Scientist Bioinformatician who can effectively build tools to optimize and accelerate molecular diagnostic assay design efforts as well as automate pipelines for data analysis to drive continuous improvement efforts ultimately enabling commercialization of robust diagnostic tests.
What You’ll Work On
The individual is responsible for the development and/or implementation of bioinformatics tools to accelerate nucleic acid amplification assay design efforts
Develop and maintain automated pipelines to enable rapid and robust data analysis and to drive the continuous improvement and optimization of nucleic acid amplification tests
Apply advanced data analytics and machine learning concepts to provide a greater understanding and interpretation of data sets
Create tools for compilation of large data sets in multiple formats from multiple sources for analysis
Design experiments to further the understanding and characterization of nucleic acid amplification assays
Drive the continuous improvement of data analysis tools and methods used for assay design
Provide written reports, technical documentation and/or oral presentations to internal and external users
Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team with other scientists, chemists, engineers and manufacturing personnel
Initiates new experiments, leads medium sized projects or multiple smaller projects, develops and executes more advanced preclinical scientific research and/or development.
May be part of team or capable of submitting ideas for inventions; may publishes or innovates through patent filings and/or scientific publications.
Demonstrated ability to analyze, interpret, and present data are essential
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's in bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science or related field
Minimum Seven years of full-time experience in an similar scope of work. OR Five years of experience plus a master's degree, OR two years of work plus PHD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science or related field.
Extensive expertise in statistics, data mining, machine learning and/or data modeling techniques
Excellent analytical and troubleshooting capabilities
Demonstrated ability to work independently or as part of a team to achieve desired results from general objectives
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively
Hands-on experience in building bioinformatics tools for selection of primers and probes for nucleic acid amplification assays
Preferred Qualifications
M.S. or Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science or related field
Extensive experience in the design and optimization of nucleic acid amplification assays
Use of standard bioinformatics tools and databases (BLAST, GenBank)
Experience analyzing nucleic acid secondary structures
Proficient and hands-on in Python in a Linux environment, including experience in building automated pipelines for data analysis and maintaining bioinformatics pipelines
Knowledge of various programing languages (R, Python, Perl, etc.) is a plus

The base pay for this position is
$98,000.00 – $196,000.00In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
