Today, Lonza is a global leader in life sciences operating across five continents. While we work in science, there’s no magic formula to how we do it. Our greatest scientific solution is talented people working together, devising ideas that help businesses to help people. In exchange, we let our people own their careers. Their ideas, big and small, genuinely improve the world. And that’s the kind of work we want to be part of.

Lonza's High Throughput and Process Modeling R&D team is looking for an early-career scientist/engineer with industry experience in bioprocessing. Join us if you're eager to contribute to transformative innovations in bioprocess development.

Position Responsibilities:

As an R&D Scientist/Engineer, you will play an integral role in developing and implementing innovative workflows to support brand new projects. Your responsibilities include:

Bioreactor Operations:

  • Assisting with the operation of laboratory-scale bioreactors and distributed control systems to support R&D activities.
  • Supporting the development and optimization of bioreactor workflows for experimental and process needs.
  • Assisting in maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of bioreactor systems.

High-Throughput Workflows:

  • Help design and optimize high-throughput experimental workflows for cell culture or protein-based systems, generating data for machine learning model development in support of biologics R&D initiatives.
  • Supporting the development and implementation of methodologies to characterize cell and cell culture materials, bringing to bear high-throughput approaches where applicable.
  • Contributing to the analysis and interpretation of experimental data to support high-throughput experimentation.

General Responsibilities:

  • Consulting scientific literature and contributing to experimental design and execution.
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary R&D teams to deliver results within an agile project management framework.
  • Clearly and frequently communicating project progress and experimental results to collaborators.
  • Mentoring and guiding junior colleagues as needed to foster team development.

Position Requirements:

To excel in this role, you should bring the following qualifications:

  • Educational Background:
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience:
  • 2–4 years of relevant industry experience in R&D or bioprocessing.
  • Hands-on experience with laboratory-scale bioreactors or high-throughput mammalian cell and protein workflows is strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with suspension mammalian cell culturing, sterile technique, & kit-based biological assays.
  • Experience with robotic liquid handlers, Python programming, or cell characterization techniques is also a plus.
  • Technical Skills:
  • Strong understanding of engineering principles, including mass and energy balances, heat and mass transfer, and fluid mechanics.
  • Interest in fixing and maintaining laboratory equipment.
  • Proficiency in analyzing quantitative data and applying statistical tools to experimental design.
  • An understanding of molecular biology concepts and their relevance to bioprocessing
  • Communication and Collaboration:
  • Strong ability to communicate technical results effectively through verbal and written channels.
  • A collaborative approach and the ability to work within a multidisciplinary team environment.

What We Offer:

  • A dynamic and innovative work environment where you can drive impactful research and technology development.
  • Opportunities for professional growth through collaboration, mentorship, and hands-on project involvement.
  • The opportunity to work on brand-new technologies that integrate high-throughput experimentation and machine learning in biologics development.
